De Rossi Extends With Roma
The domineering midfielder had been linked with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, whose sporting director Predrag Mijatovic has often stated his public admiration of the player.
Having debuted for his hometown club in 2001, it was never likely he would leave Rome, touted as the successor to Francesco Totti as the icon of the club, and after a slightly nervous wait for Romanistas, the 24-year-old has signed his extension.
De Rossi will earn approximately £5.7 million in the upcoming 2008-09 season, rising to £6 million the following season and going as high as £6.4 million between 2010 and 2012.
De Rossi recently ended a Euro 2008 campaign with Italy in which he performed well on the worst possible note, missing his second high-profile penalty of the season. While the one against Manchester United in the Champions League was simply horribly mis-hit over the bar, this one was expertly saved by Spain captain Iker Casillas, who yesterday lifted the trophy after a win over Germany.
