Argentina 3-0 Brazil (Beijing Olympics Games)
(BEIJING, August 20) -- Argentina blanked Brazil 3-0 in a much-anticipated semifinal encounter between the two football powerhouses on Tuesday in the Olympic Men's Football competition.
The first half ended in a 0-0 draw, after both sides missed some opportunities to score.
In the second half, Argentina took control of the match and launched a series of dangerous attacks. Sergio Aguero's two goals established a 2-0 lead for Argentina, and Juan Riquelme's penalty extended the lead.
Brazil's Lucas and Thiago Neves were both red-carded within three minutes of each other as Brazil was reduced to nine men. Both sides failed to score during the remaining time and the match ended in Argentina's 3-0 victory.
In the other semifinal, Nigeria advanced to the final of the Olympic Men's Football tournament after giving surprise semifinalist Belgium a 4-1 hiding.
Belgium failed to reproduce the level at which it performed against Italy in the quarterfinal match.
Olubayo Adefemi scored the opening goal for Nigeria in the 17th minute, collecting the ball inside the penalty area and slotting home from a tight angle.
Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi's goals in the 59th minute and in the 72nd minute extended the lead to 3-0. Chibuzor Okonkwo's 78th-minute goal changed the score to 4-0.
Laurent Ciman's thundering free-kick goal in the 88th minute gave Belgium some dignity but could not change his team's fate of elimination.
Argentina will play Nigeria for the Olympic gold medal in the final on Saturday, while Brazil will take on Belgium in the bronze medal match on Friday.
