Goodfellas voted best film ever made

Goodfellas has topped a list of the 100 greatest movies of all time.

Martin Scorsese’s Mob classic was voted the best piece of cinema by a panel of experts.

The film was based on real-life gangster Henry Hill and starred Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro, with an Oscar-winning performance by Joe Pesci.

It was number one in a “definitive guide to the finest films ever made” compiled by Total Film magazine.

“Goodfellas has it all – story, dialogue, performances, technique,” the magazine said. “It is slick, arguably the slickest film ever made. But it is also considered, layered and freighted with meaning.”

Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece Vertigo was second on the list and Jaws was third.

Fourth was Fight Club, the controversial and violent film starring Brad Pitt.

The Godfather: Part II was fifth and Citizen Kane, which has topped countless other movie polls over the years, was relegated to sixth.

Seventh was Tokyo Story, made by Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu in 1953 and revered by film buffs.

The Empire Strikes Back, the second film in the Star Wars saga, was eighth, followed by The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Cary Grant comedy His Girl Friday.

Chinatown, Taxi Driver and It’s A Wonderful Life are just outside the top 10.

The top 100 throws up some surprises – Casablanca only makes number 98 and Lawrence of Arabia languishes at number 77.

A Total Film spokesman said: “Choosing the final 100 provoked endless rows and debates but we think we’ve put together the definitive list.”

The full list is published in a special edition of Total Film available from October 27.
