نیکو خردمند بازیگر با سابقه سینما پس از تحمل یک دوره بیماری درگذشت. از بازیگر فیلم خاطره‌انگیز "پرده آخر" که در سال‌های اخیر کم کار شده بود27 شهریور ماه در جشن خانه سینما تجلیل شد.
نیکو خردمند بازیگر و صداپیشه پیشکسوت سینمای ایران صبح امروز سه شنبه در بیمارستان ابن سینا درگذشت.

آهو خردمند خواهر این مرحوم با تایید خبر فوق به خبرنگار مهر گفت: وی پس از عارضه سکته قلبی در بیمارستان ابن سینا بستری بودند و امروز نزدیک چهار صبح دارفانی را وداع گفتند. مراسم تشیع پیکر وی متعاقبا اعلام می شود.

متولد 1311 در تهران است و فعالیت هنری‌اش را از سال 1337 با گویندگی در رادیو آغاز کرده و از سال 1339نیز در دوبله مشغول بوده است.

وی کار بازی در سینما را از سال 1369 با فیلم "پرده آخر" به کارگردانی واروژ کریم مسیحی آغاز کرد که اولین نقش آفرینی او در سینما سیمرغ بلورین بهترین بازیگر نقش دوم زن در نهمین جشنواره فیلم فجر را برایش به ارمغان آورد.

این بازیگرهمچنین سیمرغ بلورین بهترین بازیگر نقش دوم زن در دوازدهمین جشنواره فیلم فجر را برای فیلم "بازیچه" دریافت کرد و برای فیلم "غزال" نامزد دریافت جایزه بهترین بازیگر نقش دوم زن در چهاردهمین جشنواره فیلم فجر شده است.

نیکو خردمند در سال‌های اخیر در فیلم‌های "پرونده هاوانا"، "کافه ستاره" و" چند می‌گیری گریه کنی" بازی کرد

به گزارش شبكه خبر، "لایق" از هفته گذشته در بیمارستان قلب تهران بستری شده بود و پزشکان معالج، وضع عمومی وی را وخیم اعلام کرده بودند.

"جمشید لایق"، در سال 1310 در یکی از محله های قدیمی تهران متولد شد.

وی پس از اخذ دیپلم ادبی و هنرستان هنرپیشگی در سال 1332 با گروه هنر ملی آشنا شد.

این هنرمند قدیمی در سال 1333 دوره بازیگری و کارگردانی را زیر نظر یک استاد تئاتر در آمریکا گذراند و در سال 1338 به استخدام اداره هنرهای دراماتیک درآمد.

مرحوم "لایق" در سال 1353 برای دریافت لیسانس درام شناسی، کارگردانی و بازیگری در دانشگاه تهران مشغول به تحصیل شد.

این بازیگر فقید در کنار بازیگری و کارگردانی، در دانشگاه آزاد اسلامی نیز تدریس می كرد.

وی همچنین موفق به کسب درجه دکترای هنری از وزارت فرهنگ و ارشاد اسلامی شد.

از آثار سینمایی و ماندگار این هنرمند باسابقه می توان به فیلم های رگبار، کلاغ، دایره مینا، ترنج، بوعلی سینا، شاخه های بید، در آرزوی ازدواج، و سگ کشی اشاره كرد.

"لایق" هنچنین در مجموعه های تلویزیونی مانند محاکمه، سربداران ، سلطان و شبان و هزاردستان بازی كرد.

"جمشید لایق" آخرین بار در سال 1378 در نمایش "ریچارد سوم" به کارگردانی داوود رشیدی روی صحنه تئاتر رفت.

The U.S. government seeks forfeiture of at least three
mosques, including this one in Houston, Texas.


Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced Thursday's filing of an amended civil complaint seeking forfeiture of the Alavi Foundation's interest in the 36-story office tower located on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.

The tower is owned by 650 Fifth Avenue Company, a partnership between the Alavi Foundation and Assa Corp., the Justice Department said. The amended complaint alleges that the Alavi Foundation provided services to the Iranian government and transferred money from 650 Fifth Avenue Company to Bank Melli, Iran's largest state-owned financial entity.

U.S. and European Union officials last year designated Bank Melli as a proliferator for supporting Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs and funneling money to the Revolutionary Guard and Quds Force, considered terrorist groups by the United States.

Bank Melli issued a statement last year denying involvement in any deceptive banking practices.

Thursday's amended complaint seeks forfeiture of all assets of the Alavi Foundation and Assa Corp., including bank accounts owned by 650 Fifth Avenue Company, the Alavi Foundation and Assa Corp.; and properties owned by the foundation in New York, Maryland, Virginia, Texas and California.

It alleges that the properties were "involved in and [were] the proceeds of money laundering offenses," and that the owners violated the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, executive orders and U.S. Department of Treasury regulations.

"As today's complaint alleges in great detail, the Alavi Foundation has effectively been a front for the government of Iran," Bharara said. "For two decades, the Alavi Foundation's affairs have been directed by various Iranian officials, including Iranian ambassadors to the United Nations, in violation of a series of American laws. The Alavi Foundation's former president remains under investigation for alleged obstruction of justice, and both the criminal and civil investigations are ongoing."

John Winter, a New York lawyer representing the Alavi Foundation, said his client would challenge the complaint. "We're obviously disappointed that the government brought this action because we have been cooperating with the government since this investigation began about a year ago and we intend to litigate this matter," he said in a telephone interview.

"It may take some time, but at the end of this litigation, we're of the mind that we're going to prevail here."

The buildings remained open and were continuing to operate as usual.

"There are no allegations of any wrongdoing on the part of any of these tenants or occupants," said Yusill Scribner, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York in a written statement. "The tenants and occupants remain free to use the properties as they have before today's filing."

According to the complaint, the New York tower was built in the 1970s by a nonprofit organization operated by the Shah of Iran to pursue the country's charitable interests in the United States. Bank Melli financed its construction in prime real estate near Rockefeller Center.

In 1979, after the Iranian revolution, the Islamic Republic of Iran established the Bonyad Mostazafan of New York, since renamed the Alavi Foundation, to take possession of and manage property it had expropriated from the former government, including the Fifth Avenue building.

Calls to the Iranian Mission were not immediately returned.

The mosques are in New York, Maryland, California and Texas.

At the Islamic Institute of New York in Queens, two worshipers said they found out about the move Thursday as they arrived for evening prayers. The front page of the court document stating the terms of the case was tacked to the front door accompanied by a letter from the U.S. Attorney's office to the Mostazafan Foundation.

A senior Justice Department official, trying to blunt any criticism from Muslim groups, told reporters that the government is moving against the Iranian landlords of the buildings, not targeting or "seizing mosques" as religious-oriented facilities. The mosques just happen to be among the tenants of the buildings in question, the official said.

But, in a statement, the Council on American-Islamic Relations called the move unprecedented and said it may have First Amendment implications.

"Whatever the details of the government's case against the owners of the mosques, as a civil rights organization we are concerned that the seizure of American houses of worship could have a chilling effect on the religious freedom of citizens of all faiths and may send a negative message to Muslims worldwide," said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

He said the move comes at a bad time, given the community's fear of a backlash resulting from a Muslim psychiatrist being charged in the deadly shooting spree at Fort Hood in Texas.

Relations between Iran and much of the international community have been tense in recent years over Iran's nuclear ambitions. Iran states that it wants to develop its nuclear program solely for peaceful purposes; the United States and a number of other countries have said they suspect the oil-rich nation is pursuing a nuclear bomb.

In another U.S.-Iran development, President Obama said Thursday in a letter to Congress that the national emergency with respect to Iran that was declared in 1979 during the Iranian revolution has not ended.

"Our relations with Iran have not yet returned to normal, and the process of implementing the January 19, 1981, agreements with Iran is still under way," Obama wrote in an official "notice of continuation" required to extend the emergency status with Iran beyond the anniversary date of November 14. تيم المپياد دانش‌اموزي نجوم و اخترفيزيك جمهوري اسلامي ايران با كسب چهار نشان طلا و دو مدال نقره و يك مدال برنز از لحاظ تعداد نشان‌ها به مقام اول سومين المپياد جهاني نجوم و اخترفيزيك دست يافت.

به گزارش خبرنگار علمي خبرگزاري دانشجويان ايران(ايسنا)، بعد از ايران، تيم المپياد نجوم هند با كسب دو نشان طلا، دو نشان نقره و يك نشان برنز به مقام دوم المپياد دست يافت.

مراسم اختتاميه المپياد و اعطاي مدال‌ها، دقايقي پيش با حضور دكتر محسن پور، سرپرست وزارت آموزش و پرورش، دكتر حداد عادل، رييس كميسون فرهنگي مجلس و رييس المپياد جهاني نجوم در هتل المپيك پايان يافت.

چهارمين دوره المپياد جهاني نجوم سال آينده در چين برگزار مي‌شود.

احمدی نژاد، بزرگ ترین وارد کننده در تاریخ ایران

در حالی که دولت محمود احمدی نژاد همچنان به دلیل تخلفات انتخاباتی و اعتراضات پس از آن با بحران سیاسی روبه روست، با انتشار گزارش های پی در پی در مورد عملکرد اقتصادی خود با چالش های جدیدی مواجه شده است.

در یکی از تازه ترین گزارش ها در خصوص سیاست های اقتصادی دولت احمدی نژاد، روز گذشته سایت "آینده" با انتشار گزارشی آماری به مقایسه حجم واردات انجام شده توسط این دولت با دیگر دولت های جمهوری اسلامی پرداخته است. این گزارش حکایت دارد دولت نهم در طی تنها چهار سال بیشتر از مجموع چهارده سال ریاست جمهوری سید علی خامنه ای و اکبر هاشمی رفسنجانی کالا وارد کرده است. این رقم از سوی بانک مرکزی جمهوری اسلامی 220 میلیارد دلار گزارش شده است.

این در حالی است که اداره گمرک که زیر نظر دولت احمدی نژاد فعالیت می کند و مسئولیت انتشار میزان رقم مالی وارداتی را عهده دار است پیشتر ادعا کرده بود 185 میلیارد دلار کالا به ایران وارد شده است. کارشناسان اقتصادی معتقدند 35 میلیارد دلار اختلاف میان رقم واقعی 220 میلیارد دلاری و رقم اعلام شده توسط گمرک، نشان دهنده تلاش دولت برای شانه خالی کردن از انتقادهایی است که علیه سیاست های وارداتی آن مطرح می شود.



واردات کمر شکن

بر اساس گزارش دیروز سایت "آینده"، دولت در چهار سال نخست ریاست جمهوری احمدی نژاد با نرخی تصاعدی به ترتیب ۴۳ میلیارد دلار، ۵۰ میلیارد دلار، ۵۸ میلیارد دلار ۶۹ میلیارد دلار کالا به داخل کشور وارد کرده است.

ناظران اقتصادی اعتقاد دارند اتخاذ سیاست های افراطی وارداتی از سوی دولت احمدی نژاد باعث شده است بسیاری از فعالیت های اقتصادی داخلی کشور با رکود مواجه شوند. بر این اساس با افزایش حجم واردات از خارج کشور، تحرک اقتصادی در داخل کشور نزول پیدا کرده که تبعاتی همچون نرخ بیکاری و تورم بالا و همچنین قابلیت زود ورشکسته شدن اقتصاد بخش غیردولتی را به همراه داشته است. اشتیاق نهادها و وزارت خانه های اقتصادی دولت نهم برای وارد کردن کالا به کشور به اندازه ای بوده که اقلامی مانند گندم که کشور پیش از دولت نهم در زمینه تولید ان خودکفا شده بود نیز بار دیگر به داخل کشور وارد می شوند.

به گزارش این سایت تنها در دو ماهه ابتدای امسال یک میلیون و 195 هزار تن از این محصول وارد کشور شده که نسبت به مدت مشابه سال قبل با افزایشی 100 درصد روبه رو بوده است. کارگران صنعت نیشکر و قند و همچنین شالیکارانی که در تامین برنج می کوشند از دیگر قربانیان بزرگ سیاست های وارداتی محمود احمدی نژاد بوده اند.



حساب ذخیره ارزی منفی است

طبق گزارش های منتشر شده در حالی که دولت احمدی نژاد – به ویژه با فروش نفت- 339 میلیارد دلار درآمد ارزی در چهار سال اخیر کسب کرده، اما حساب ذخیره ارزی با موجودی "تعهدی" 18 میلیارد دلاری مواجه شده است. این به معنای آن است که میزان بدهی تعهدی آن ۱۸ میلیارد دلار بیش از موجودی آن بوده و مازاد درآمد ارزی کشور پس‌انداز نشده است. این در حالی است که محمد خاتمی در پایان هشت سال ریاست جمهوری با درآمد نفتی به میزان یک سوم درآمدهای نجومی چهار سال نخست دولت احمدی نژاد، ده میلیارد دلار به این صندوق تزریق کرده بود.

"آینده" در گزارش دیروز خود، همچنین یادآوری کرده که مجموع در آمد های ارزی در هشت سال جنگ و هشت سال ریاست جمهوری هاشمی رفسنجانی به ترتیب 115 و 150 میلیارد بوده است. به دیگر بیان مجموع درآمد های ایران در این شانزده سال 74 میلیارد دلار کمتر از درآمد ارزی دولت نخست احمدی نژاد بوده است.

گفتنی است احمدی نژاد همزمان با افزایش نجومی درآمد های نفتی در تصمیمی بی سابقه تصمیم به انحلال سازمان برنامه و بودجه و شورای پول و اعتبار گرفت. منتقدان معتقدند این انحلال ها با هدف سیطره کامل دولت احمدی نژاد بر درآمد های عظیم نفتی بدون آنکه مجبور به پاسخ گویی به نهادهای ناظر مالی باشد انجام شده است.

در همین راستا ابتدای هفته گزارشی دیگر که در سایت "فردا" منتشر شد نیز، از اختلاف 66 میلیارد دلاری میان آمار بانک مرکزی با ادعاهای دولت در خصوص تبادلات صادراتی و وارداتی در چهار سال اخیر پرده بر داشت.

فاطمه بحرینی، مشهور به "رزا منتظمی" یکی از نام آورترین معلمان آشپزی ایرانی و نویسنده کتاب پرفروش "هنر آشپزی" در سن ۸۷ سالگی در تهران درگذشت.

خانم منتظمی کتاب "هنر آشپزی" را نخستین بار در سال ۱۳۴۳ با ۶۰۰ دستور غذایی منتشر کرد. نوشتن این کتاب به گفته خانم منتظمی بیش از ۲ سال طول کشید. او در جایی نقل کرده بود که از سال ۱۳۳۷ در تهران کلاس آشپزی و شیرینی‌پزی داشته‌ است و صدها نفر در کلاس‌های او شرکت داشته‌اند.

چاپ های اخیر "هنر آشپزی" در دو جلد منتشر شده و بیش از ۱۷۰۰ غذای ایرانی و فرنگی را شامل می‌شود.





گفته می شود "هنر آشپزی" یکی از پرفروش ترین کتاب های ایران بوده است که تاکنون بیش از یک میلیون نسخه از آن در مواردی حتی بدون اطلاع نویسنده آن منتشر و فروخته شده است. این کتاب تاکنون بیش از پنجاه بار به طور رسمی تجدید چاپ شده است.

انتشار و فروش این کتاب منبع اصلی درآمد خانم منتظمی طی ۵۰ سال اخیر بوده است. آرش وفاداری، نوه خانم منتظمی به بخش فارسی بی بی سی گفت که کلاس های آشپزی او تا پیش از انقلاب اسلامی برگزار می شد اما پس از آن خانم منتظمی فقط از راه فروش کتاب و راهنمایی علاقمندان آشپزی، به آموزش می پرداخت.

در جریان گفت و گویی که ۵ سال قبل خبرگزاری میراث فرهنگی ایران از خانم منتظمی منتشر کرده بود، او از وزارت فرهنگ و ارشاد اسلامی به دلیل ندادن کاغذ برای انتشار این کتاب انتقاد کرده بود.

خانم منتظمی گفته بود هر ساله ۲۰ هزار نسخه از این کتاب چاپ می کرده اما از آن سال به دلیل قطع حمایت وزارت ارشاد فقط ۵ هزار نسخه از آن را توانسته منتشر کند.

در سال های اخیر در ایران کتاب های متنوعی درباره هنر آشپزی و شیرینی پزی منتشر شده است اما به گفته دست اندر کاران صنعت نشر هیچک همچون "هنر آشپزی" با استقبال طبقات مختلف مردم رو به رو نشد.

کتاب خانم منتظمی در چند دهه اخیر در منزل اکثر ایرانی ها به چشم می خورد و به زوج های جوان هم هدیه داده می شود.

این کتاب در خلال جنگ هشت ساله ایران و عراق و دوران کمبود کاغذ و مشکلات چاپ در این کشور، برای جلوگیری از فروش با قیمت بالاتر با "دفترچه بسیج اقتصادی" فروخته می شد.

خریداران هنگام دریافت این کتاب "دفتر بسیج اقتصادی" را که مخصوص دریافت اقلام ضروری زندگی در دوران جنگ بود ارائه می کردند و این دفترچه ممهور به مهری می شد که نشان می داد صاحب آن، کتاب "هنر آشپزی" را خریداری کرده است.

خانم منتظمی خود ناشر کتاب "هنر آشپزی" بود و در دوره ای طولانی این کتاب را در منزلش به فروش می رساند

گروهی از هواداران دولت ایران در نمایشگاه مطبوعات در تهران به سوی مهدی کروبی حمله کرده‌اند به طوری که او ناچار به ترک محل نمایشگاه شده است. برخی گزارش‌ها از تیراندازی هوایی توسط یکی از محافظان آقای کروبی حکایت دارد.

آقای کروبی، یکی از رهبران مخالفان دولت که روز جمعه اول آبان (۲۳ اکتبر) به تماشای نمایشگاه مطبوعات رفته بود، ابتدا مورد استقبال هواداران جنبش اعتراضی ایران موسوم به "جنبش سبز" قرار گرفت، اما دقایقی بعد حمله هواداران دولت به او آغاز شد.

پارلمان نیوز، وبسایت خبری فراکسیون اقلیت مجلس شورای اسلامی گزارش داده است که حمله کنندگان قصد "ضرب و شتم" آقای کروبی را داشته اند.

این خبرگزاری همچنین نوشته است: "یکی از محافظان مهدی کروبی برای متفرق کردن معترضان به این کاندیدای شکست خورده انتخابات تیری را به صورت هوایی شلیک کرد که این امر در بین محافظان شخصیت های کشوری بسیار به ندرت انجام می گیرد".

آقای کروبی در نهایت در حالی که عمامه از سرش افتاده بود، محل نمایشگاه را ترک کرده است.

او روز ۲۶ تیرماه هم هنگامی که قصد ورود به دانشگاه تهران برای شرکت در نمازجمعه را داشت، مورد حمله لباس شخصی ها قرار گرفت.

حملات علیه آقای کروبی به ویژه پس از آن شدت گرفت که در نامه ای به اکبر هاشمی رفسنجانی، رئیس مجمع تشخیص مصلحت نظام، خواهان رسیدگی به موضوع تجاوز جنسی علیه بعضی بازداشت شدگان حوادث پس از انتخابات ریاست جمهوری ایران شد.

مقامات قضایی ایران این گفته های آقای کروبی را رد کردند و برخی از آنها اخیرا از محاکمه او به اتهام تبلیغ علیه نظام سخن گفته اند.

The response will come as a disappointment to the U.S., Russia and France, which endorsed the U.N. plan Friday they drafted in discussions with Iran earlier in the week. The agreement was meant to ease Western fears about Iran's potential to make a nuclear weapon.

While Iran did not reject the plan outright, state TV said that Tehran was waiting for a response to its own proposal to buy nuclear fuel rather than ship low-enriched uranium to Russia for further enrichment. Iran has often used counterproposals as a way to draw out nuclear negotiations with the West.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is waiting for a constructive and confidence building response to the clear proposal of buying fuel for the Tehran research reactor," state TV quoted an unnamed source close to Iran's negotiating team as saying Friday.

Iranian opposition to the U.N. plan could be driven by concerns that it weakens Iran's control over its stockpiles of nuclear fuel and could be perceived as a concession to the U.S., which suspects Iran is using its nuclear program as a way to covertly develop weapons — an allegation denied by Tehran.

An unnamed member of Iran's negotiating team urged world powers Friday to "refrain from past mistakes in violating agreements and make efforts to win the trust of the Iranian nation," according to state TV.

President Barack Obama has stepped up diplomatic engagement with Iran since he took office in January and has faulted the Bush administration for refusing to talk to U.S. adversaries. But he has also threatened harsher sanctions if Iran does not cooperate to ease fears about the nature of its nuclear program.

The U.N. Security Council has already passed three sets of sanctions against Iran for failing to suspend uranium enrichment, but the U.S. faces a serious challenge in convincing Russia and China to go even further because of their close ties to Tehran.

The draft U.N. agreement was formalized Wednesday after three days of discussions in Vienna. The talks followed a similar meeting at the beginning of October in Geneva that included the highest-level bilateral contact between the U.S. and Iran in years.

The head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, Mohamed ElBaradei, said after the completion of the Vienna talks that he hoped Iran and its three interlocutors — the U.S., Russia and France — would approve the plan by Friday.

The three countries heeded his call Friday before Iran announced its preference to buy the 20 percent-enriched uranium it needs for its Tehran reactor, which has been producing medical isotopes for the past few decades.

The country is currently enriching uranium to a 3.5 percent level for a nuclear power plant it is planning to build in southwestern Iran. Iranian officials have said it is more economical to purchase the more highly-enriched uranium needed for the Tehran reactor than produce it domestically.

The Vienna-brokered plan would have required Iran to send 1.2 tons (1,100 kilograms) of low-enriched uranium — around 70 percent of its stockpile — to Russia in one batch by the end of the year, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said Thursday.

After further enrichment in Russia, France would have converted the uranium into fuel rods that would be returned to Iran for use in the Tehran reactor, he said.

Iran agreeing to ship most of its enriched uranium abroad would significantly ease fears about Tehran's nuclear program, since 2,205 pounds (0.98 tons, 1,000 kilograms) is the commonly accepted amount of low-enriched uranium needed to produce weapons-grade uranium for a single nuclear bomb.

Based on the present Iranian stockpile, the U.S. has estimated that Tehran could produce a nuclear weapon between 2010 and 2015, an assessment that broadly matches those from Israel and other nations.

International concerns about Iran's nuclear program spiked in September when it was revealed the country was constructing a previously undisclosed uranium enrichment facility near the holy city of Qom.

Gallup recorded an average daily approval rating of 53 per cent for Mr Obama for the third quarter of the year, a sharp drop from the 62 per cent he recorded from April.

His current approval rating – hovering just above the level that would make re-election an uphill struggle – is close to the bottom for newly-elected president. Mr Obama entered the White House with a soaring 78 per cent approval rating.

The bad polling news came as Mr Obama returned to the campaign trail to prevent his Democratic party losing two governorships next month in states in which he defeated Senator John McCain in last November's election.

Jeffrey Jones of Gallup explained: "The dominant political focus for Obama in the third quarter was the push for health care reform, including his nationally televised address to Congress in early September.

"Obama hoped that Congress would vote on health care legislation before its August recess, but that goal was missed, and some members of Congress faced angry constituents at town hall meetings to discuss health care reform. Meanwhile, unemployment continued to climb near 10 per cent."

Governor Jon Corzine of New Jersey is in severe danger of defeat while Democrats are fast losing hope that Creigh Deeds can beat his Republican opponent in Virginia. Twin Democratic losses would be a major blow to Mr Obama's prestige.

Campaigning for Mr Corzine in Hackensack on Wednesday night, Mr Obama delivered a plea that almost seemed as much for himself as the local candidate: "I'm here today to urge you to cast aside the cynics and the sceptics, and prove to all Americans that leaders who do what's right and who do what's hard will be rewarded and not rejected."

Mr Corzine, a former Goldman Sachs executive and multi-millionaire, is currently running even in New Jersey, which is normally comfortably Democratic, while Mr Deeds is trailing badly in Virginia, a swing state that was key to Mr Obama's 2008 victory.

Mr Obama is also facing widespread criticism for his drawn-out decision-making process over what to do next in Afghanistan.

Republicans sense Mr Obama is in a vulnerable position and this week saw the return to the public stage of his perhaps most vehement opponent – Vice-President Dick Cheney.

In a blistering speech on Wednesday night, he accused Mr Obama of failing to give Americans troops on the ground a clear mission or defined goals and of being seemingly "afraid to make a decision" about Afghanistan "The White House must stop dithering while America's armed forces are in danger," Cheney said at the Center for Security Policy in Washington.

"Make no mistake, signals of indecision out of Washington hurt our allies and embolden our adversaries."

He hit out at Obama aides who suggested that the Bush administration had failed to weigh up conditions in Afghanistan properly before committing troops.

"Now they seem to be pulling back and blaming others for their failure to implement the strategy they embraced. It's time for President Obama to do what it takes to win a war he has repeatedly and rightly called a war of necessity."
