It’s back to business for the Winter Champions

It’s back to business for the Winter Champions

The injury time equaliser against Spezia makes Juventus mathematical certainties for the crown of winter champions: tonight’s delayed kick-off between Napoli and Genoa will only decide whether the Bianconeri have to share top spot with the Azzuri.

While they wait to find out, Deschamps’ men this afternoon began their preparations for the clash with Rimini, the team which managed to hold Juventus to a 1-1 on the opening day of the championship. That draw gave the Bianconeri an immediate taste of how difficult Serie B really is, while the men from Emilia Romagna were given the confidence to fight it out at the top end of the table. Twenty-one games later Rimini find themselves in seventh place on 34 points, five behind the Bianconeri, and with the second best attacking record in the championship. It’s still as important as ever that Deschamps get some relief in defence, especially as he’ll be without Giannichedda, suspended following his sending-off against Spezia; this afternoon’s training session will certainly have given the Bianconeri coach some useful early indications for the week ahead.

Double Oscar for Buffon

Gigi Buffon’s habit of winning important prizes is still going strong in 2007. For his 29th birthday (celebrated on Sunday) the Bianconeri super-stopper picked up a handful of awards at the 10th annual AIC (the Italian Footballers’ Association) Oscars in Milan.

For the seventh time in his career, Gigi was voted best goalkeeper in the championship by his fellow players, demonstrating his supremacy in the role once more. And, as a testament to his thoroughly likeable personality, he also picked up the prize for the best loved athlete.

Along with his friend Fabio Cannavaro, Buffon - joined by fellow Bianconeri Raffaele Palladino (in the running for best young player) and Team Manager Gianluca Pessotto - was one of the leading lights at Monday night’s award ceremony in Milan

Thanks to a glittering final season in Bianconeri colours, Cannavaro picked up a whole host of awards including best defender, best Italian player and best player from the 2005/06 championship. The other awards went to Luca Toni (best attacker), Kakà and David Suazo (joint winners of the best foreign player award), Daniele De Rossi (best young player), Luciano Spalletti (best coach) and Roberto Rosetti (best referee), a native of Turin.

Juve To Spend 40 Million Upon Serie A Return

Lampard, Klose, and Saviola are among the players being followed.

After the winter transfer window, now there are 40 million euros for Juve to spend from the Ifil property that will help reconstruct the team.

With Mascherano now gone to Liverpool, Juve have put their eyes on Mavuba, 22 years old, central midfielder of Bordeaux and, in the last few hours, also on Ledesma, even though it's difficult that Lotito will give him away. But the biggest rumour concerns Lampard, who rumour has it can be sold for 12 million euros. In the Premier League players Juve are interested in include Fabregas (Arsenal) and Gerrard (Liverpool).

The defence will be built around Grygera. Criscito has already arrived, and there are also negotiations going on for Metzelder (Borussia Dortmund), Van Den Borre (Anderlecht), and Barzagli (Palermo). Reggina's Mesto and Faty of Rennes are also observed players.

In the next few days there will be further negotiations between Juventus, Werder Bremen, and Klose's agent. The player's price tag has been fixed at 15 million euros. The player has already shown his interest in playing in Serie A. But Juve are also tracking Pizarro of Bayern Munich and Barcelona's Saviola, who will be free in June if he does not extend his contract.

New Stadium Project

The project for the new Juventus stadium was presented to the town council last night. Conceived by the Gau and Shesa studios, the arena has been designed for usage throughout the week, and not just on match days. The existing Delle Alpi structures to be maintained are those below a height of 18 metres, that is the foundation installation, while everything visible to the public will be brand new, with the exception of the pillars positioned around the two curved ends which have become something of a symbol of the stadium. This decision was taken for a number of reasons, among them rejuvenation of the surrounding area and consistency with the innovative structures built for the 2006 Winter Olympics, as well as the need to match the necessary criteria for hosting games at the 2012 European Championships, including the quarter finals, and compliance with the government’s bill on stadiums.

The new stadium, which will take up an area of 50 000m, will seat 40 000 spectators in the round. The external structure and the cover will be two of the most significant innovations. The former will be enveloped in fine web which will allow it, with the use of projectors, to take on different colours according to the time of day as well as videos and other images. Made of transparent Teflon, the cover will allow light to filter through. An athletics track does not feature in the plans.

A 32000m2 commercial space will surround the sports facility making it a centre for entertainment all year round.

The new installation, whose construction will depend on whether or not Italy are awarded the 2012 European Championships, will cost around 120 million Euros (not including the commercial areas).
