Our Coach

The working-class hero

Sir Alex Ferguson has remained the foundation stone as the new Manchester United empire was carefully assembled brick by brick.

Players come and go, silverware piles up, and Old Trafford itself barely resembles the stadium that greeted Ferguson in 1986.

And now, after fears he may leave the success story he himself wrote, Ferguson is staying on to help write new chapters in the glittering history of Manchester United.
United's title winning campaign of last season - their third in succession - was never in doubt.

Worthy heir

And there is little to suggest that next year, Ferguson's final season at the managerial helm, will prove any different after the £47.1m purchases of Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Juan Sebastian Veron.

The Scot will want to finish on a high and leave a legacy as marked as Sir Matt Busby's which he began to challenge 15 years ago.
In truth, Ferguson has been a worthy heir to the Busby crown since he broke a 20-year drought to bring the league title home to Old Trafford in 1993.

Ferguson factfile
Born: 31 December 1941
Ferguson the player
1958-60: Queens Park
1960-64: St Johnstone
1964-67: Dunfermline
1967-69: Rangers
1969-73: Falkirk
1973-74: Ayr United
Ferguson the manager
1975-78: St. Mirren
1978-86: Aberdeen
1986-present: Man Utd

Born in Glasgow to a Protestant, working class family, his leadership skills first came to the fore as a shop steward in the Clyde shipyards, when Ferguson led an unofficial walk-out over a pay dispute.

However his first love has always been football.
Ferguson cut a reasonably impressive figure in a 16-year playing career.
The most infamous incident for Ferguson the player came when he was with Rangers and was made a scapegoat in the team's humiliating 4-0 defeat against arch rivals Celtic in the 1969 Cup final.

Management material

As a rumbustious striker the Scot never remotely possessed the playing prowess of some of the most celebrated names in the game.

But as a manager he has received plaudits a plenty, and on top of the trophies he has accumulated over a 26-year period, Ferguson was knighted shortly after the treble triumph in 1999.
He started out with St Mirren in 1975 before joining Aberdeen three years later.

In the granite city his tough-talking, hands-on approach was a winner.
While at Pittodrie Ferguson smashed the Celtic-Rangers "Old Firm" monopoly, winning three championships, four Scottish Cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup in six years.
Known for his fiery temper, he also won the reputation of a fiercely loyal coach who invests time and effort in star players and apprentices alike.

Southern success

It is this mix-and-match approach which has served him so well at Manchester, where Ferguson has weaved home-grown talent and foreign flair into cohesive, gutsy sides.
Yet the going has not always been good for him south of the border.

Initially his abilities were called into question by the fans.
The low point came in 1989 when the team found itself hammered 5-1 by its most bitter rivals, Manchester City.

Ferguson is out of his seat as United win the FA Cup in 1990
But chairman Martin Edwards and the board did not waver and they, like Ferguson, were rewarded by FA Cup success in 1990.

The family atmosphere he had worked hard to establish was bearing fruit and three years later the Guv'nor from Govan finally brought home the League title.

Another six have been secured and European, League and FA Cup victories litter United's success in the nineties which reached a pinnacle in 1999 with the treble triumph to follow a brace of doubles.

Single minded

His management style has been thoroughly analysed by lovers of the sport.

They have attributed his success to factors as diverse as a "working class ability" to asses the qualities of men around him, and "tunnel vision".

Whatever his given talents, Ferguson, who is married to Cathy and a father of three grown-up sons, also puts in the hours.
He is usually at the training ground by 0730 and regularly works 18-hour days.
He is also loyal to his players, although never shy to give them a blast of his temper.

For someone so consumed by football, it may come as a surprise that he has outside interests.

He owns a racehorse and has been a high-profile campaigner for Tony Blair and the Labour party.
After performing miracles at Aberdeen and Manchester United, "Fergie" is now a British footballing icon.

He has equalled and arguably surpassed Busby's record at Old Trafford.

And now he will adopt the role of worldwide statesman - and advisor no doubt - as he attempts to continue the Old Trafford dynasty.

Manchester United began life in 1878 as Newton Heath, formed by workers of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. They nearly went bankrupt in 1902 and were rescued and renamed as Manchester United. The earliest known film of Manchester United is the 2–0 victory at Burnley on 6 December 1902, filmed by Mitchell and Kenyon.

United have had three successful eras, under J. Ernest Mangnall in the 1900s, in the 50s and 60s under Sir Matt Busby, and in the 90s to present under Sir Alex Ferguson. They have won the FA Cup 11 times, the most of any team, and 15 league championships. They have also won the European Cup (now Champions League) twice. These trophies make them the second-most successful club ever in England, behind (A large city in northwestern England; its port is the country's major outlet for industrial exports) Liverpool who have a record 18 league titles, 4 European Cups and 6 FA Cups, although Manchester United have sustained their successes over far longer periods.

Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club formed in 1878 as a "works club" of Railway employees. Newton Heath LYR FC competed against other works clubs, intramural teams and various local sides. When the Football League was founded in 1888, Newton Heath players were not confident they could compete against giants like Accrington, West Bromich Albion, and Aston Villa. Instead, the "Heathens" joined a new twelve-team organization, the Football Alliance. The Alliance included Nottingham Forest; Sunderland; Ardwick, now Manchester City; The Wednesday, now Sheffield Wednesday; and Small Heath, now Birmingham City.

The Football League absorbed the Alliance in 1892 and split into two divisions, with the Second Division comprising mostly of former Alliance clubs, although Newton Heath -- now playing without the LYR designation and sponsorship, though many Railway employees still played for the team -- joined the First Division.

A playoff game between the First Division last place finisher and the Second Division winner allowed a team to be promoted or relegated from one Division to the other after the season. In 1893, Newton Heath finished last and beat Small Heath to stay in the First Division, but the next year won the relegation playoff to take Newton Heath's place in the First Division. Newton Heath became the first football club in history to be relegated.

Things swiftly got worse. In 1901, Newton Heath was adrift in the standings and deeply in debt. Then a chance escape by a St. Bernard dog belonging to team captain Harry Stafford changed everything. Local brewery magnate John Henry Davies found the dog, returned him to Stafford, and discovered the sorry plight of the local football team. Davies eventually agreed to invest heavily in the team in exchange for a controlling stake and presidency of the club.

A new-look team competed in the Second Division in 1902. Now called Manchester United FC, the team had a new, dynamic ownership and its first full-time manager (technically, Ernest Mangnall was club secretary, but his duties corresponded with those of a modern manager). With some creative signings, Manchester United battled back to the First division in 1906, and reached the quarterfinals of the FA Cup. Mangnall signed Billy Meredith from local rivals Manchester City. The "Welsh Wizard" was one of the greatest footballers of the era, and would play into his fiftieth year.

Meredith was instrumental in United's first League championship, in 1908. He was also a union organizer and one of the key figures in the nascent Professional Footballers Association. Before the 1909-1910 season began, the League locked out all PFA members and teams raced to sign scab players. In the working-class, industrial cities that were football's heartland, finding talented footballers to break a lockout proved impossible and the League caved before the season began.

Old Trafford opened on 19 February, 1910, thanks to a £60,000 investment by Davies. Liverpool won the inaugural match, continuing to build what would eventually become one of football's greatest rivalries. Under Ernest Mangnall, United won the first Charity Shield (now the FA Community Shield) and took the League championship in 1911. Mangnall deserted the red half of Manchester for the sky blue, and United barely hung on to their First Division status in the years that followed.

Nicknamed the Busby Babes

The 1958 Manchester United team was nicknamed the Busby Babes. On February 6, they were flying home from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade when the plane crashed on takeoff in a snow storm in Munich, Germany. Eight team members were killed, and two players suffered career-ending injuries. Amongst the dead was Duncan Edwards, a 21-year-old who many believe was on his way to establishing himself as one of England's greatest players ever. A survivor, Bobby Charlton would help (A division of the United Kingdom) England to win the Football World Cup in 1966.

World War I caused the suspension of the League until 1919. Without Mangnall's leadership, and with their superstar Billy Meredith also having defected to City, Manchester United were a shadow of their League-winning selves. Relegated in 1922, United climbed back up in 1925.

The 1927 death of president and club saviour John Henry Davies was a crushing blow. The new front-office team was president G. H. Lawton and manager Herbert Barnlett, but their reign was not an auspicious one. Manchester United finished the 1931 season dead last and were relegated; meanwhile, the club could not even pay players' wages. Another investor was found in James Gibson, who put up £30,000 in exchange for the chairman's job. A Third Division (with two regional sections, North and South) had joined the Football League in 1921 -- this development became relevant to United in 1934 as they flirted with the possibility of relegation from the Second Division. With a last-day win against Millwall, they stayed up by the barest of margins.

Duncan engineered a turnaround that gave United a fifth-place finish in 1935 and a Second Division title, and promotion back to the First Division, in 1936, for a one-year stay -- after his team was relegated again, Scott Duncan resigned. United returned to the First Division in 1938 after a second place finish.

The Football League was again suspended during World War II. In 1941, German bombs destroyed Old Trafford, and United was forced to share Maine Road with local rivals Manchester City from the resumption of play in 1946-47 until Old Trafford's rebuilding was completed in 1949. United finished second in the League three times while at Maine Road and won the FA Cup in 1948. The manager overseeing this run of form was a former Manchester City player, Matt Busby.

Irish international Johnny Carey anchored the Red Devils to a League Championship in 1952. The following year, Busby introduced a number of players who had come up through United's youth development programs. The "Busby Babes" included Duncan Edwards -- who held the record as youngest player to be capped for England for 50 years -- Bill Foulkes, Dennis Viollet, and Jackie Blanchflower. This infusion of young talent dominated the League, and United won the championship in 1955-56 by a margin of eleven points and successfully defended it in 1956-57. After had been pressured by the League not to compete in Europe, United won the backing of the FA and became the first English club to compete in European competition. United tore Belgian champions Anderlecht apart, 12-0 on aggregate over two matches and made it to the semifinals, falling to Real Madrid
