CL Preview: Chelsea - Roma
What: Champions League Group A, Matchday 3 Who: Chelsea (1st, 4pts) v Roma (3rd, 3pts) When: Wednesday, 22nd October, 2008 - 20:45 (CET) Where: Stamford Bridge, London Chelsea host Roma in the third match day of the UEFA Champions League this week, in a match that promises to be an intriguing battle between two injury hit sides. The Blues will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing away draw to Cluj just a few weeks ago, whilst the Giallorossi will be desperate to continue their recent winning form that saw them account for Bordeaux in this competition by a 3-1 score line. Blues Full Of Confidence As has been the case for many of the top European clubs so far this season, Chelsea have had several injuries to key players to contend with for large parts of the season. Take their most recent league match against Middlesbrough for example; the English giants were without the likes of Petr Cech, Didier Drogba, Michael Ballack, Ricardo Carvalho, Michael Essien and Joe and Ashley Cole, and still, they managed to record a resounding 5-0 victory at the Riverside stadium, giving new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari a brief insight into just how good his injury-hit squad is. On the back of that victory, and five others in the opening eight rounds of the season, Chelsea sit atop of the English Premier League table, with 20 points to their name. They have conceded just three goals in this time, and look a menacing side to face at present. Along with their great form in the Premier League, their recent home form in this competition is just as impressive, as they have now gone 13 matches without defeat, with their most recent result coming against Bordeaux in the first match day of the competition. That was to be Scolari’s first Champions League match in charge of the London club, and didn’t they mark the occasion in style, running out winners by four goals to nil. Scolari’s men are one of just three teams not to have conceded a single goal in their opening two fixtures, with Manchester United and Villarreal the other two teams. All of the facts and figures seem to point towards a Chelsea victory this week, as along with their great recent record in the Champions League; the club have not lost a match in their past 21 outings in all competitions. Their last defeat came against Fenerbahce on the 2nd of April, 2008, in the Champions League quarter-final stage. Scolari has such a strong squad at his disposal, and this is proven by the fact that the Blues have not been defeated at Stamford Bridge in all competitions since the 22nd of February, 2006, when Barcelona got the better of them in this competition. They have played 73 matches at home since that date, for 53 victories, 20 draws and no defeats, and if you are to disregard the Champions League, their undefeated run goes all the way back to the 21st of February, 2004, some 86 matches ago, when Arsenal triumphed at the Bridge by a 2-1 score line. Sure there are some injuries for Scolari and his team to deal with this week; however the London based club remains confident in their ability, which they hope will lead them to all three points against Roma. They face a side that are desperately struggling at present, and so the Blues will be looking to take full advantage of this, by further strengthening their amazing record at Stamford Bridge. Roma Looking To Avoid Another English Nightmare Roma have had a dreadful start to the 2008/09 Serie A season, as they have already lost four from seven league fixtures, and incredibly, that is the same amount they lost in the whole of last season, when they finished runners-up to Inter Milan. The Giallorossi currently find themselves in a disappointing 14th spot in the standings, with only seven points to their name, and just three points separating them from the relegation zone after seven rounds of Italian football. In their most recent league outing, the capital club were thrashed by an impressive Inter side, 4-0, in a match that marked the official return of the club’s talismanic captain Francesco Totti. As a result, their form heading into this crucial match against Chelsea is poor, and it seems as if a miracle will be required to take anything away from the contest. Prior to the international break, a 1-0 defeat at Siena ended the Giallorossi’s record of scoring in 20 successive Serie A matches, and with another scoreless outing against Inter Milan more recently, Spalletti’s men have now failed to score in the league since their 2-0 triumph at the Olimpico on the 28th of September. Their domestic form has been a concern thus far, and the same can be said for their form in this competition in recent times, as their past four fixtures have produced just the one victory, coming against Bordeaux three weeks ago. On the first match day of the campaign, they were absolutely humiliated by Romanian debutants CFR Cluj, as they went down 2-1 in their own Stadio Olimpico. It was a disastrous start to the competition, and since that performance, things have gone downhill for the capital club. Spalletti’s men will undoubtedly be anxious heading into this contest, and understandably so, as they travel to London to face English opposition, for a fourth time in the past three campaigns. In a total of eleven visits to England in their history, I Lupi have managed just the one victory – a 1-0 success at Liverpool in the UEFA Cup of 2000/01 – and seven defeats. Obviously the Romans will be looking to avoid a repeat of the 7-1 hammering they received at the hands of Manchester United at Old Trafford in the quarter final of the 2006/07 Champions League, however it certainly won’t be easygoing for the Italians, as they travel to Stamford Bridge to face arguably the most in-form side in Europe. It’s a huge match for the Giallorossi, and despite the fact that nothing is expected of them this week; a loss would only put the club in to further turmoil. Spalletti will be pleased that his captain Totti is available for selection, as his club go in search of a miracle to come away with all three points at Stamford Bridge. FORM GUIDE Chelsea October 18 v Middlesbrough (A) WON 5-0 October 5 v Aston Villa (H) WON 2-0 October 1 v CFR Cluj (A) DREW 0-0 (Champions League) September 27 v Stoke City (A) WON 2-0 September 24 v Portsmouth (A) WON 4-0 (Carling Cup) Roma October 19 v Inter (H) LOST 0-4 October 5 v Siena (A) LOST 0-1 October 1 v Bordeaux (H) WON 3-1 (Champions League) September 27 v Atalanta (H) WON 2-0 September 24 v Genoa (A) LOST 1-3 TEAM NEWS Chelsea: Their form on the field has been unbelievable, but the news off it, is far from positive. Scolari will be without Michael Essien, Ricardo Carvalho and Didier Drogba, who are all struggling with knee injuries, whilst Michael Ballack is another who is certain to miss due to a foot injury. Ashley Cole, Joe Cole and number one goal keeper Petr Cech all remain in doubt; however the latter remains optimistic of participating in the contest. Thankfully for the Portuguese manager however, John Terry and Nicolas Anelka successfully got through the match against Middlesbrough at the weekend, and should be right for this contest. Recent summer signing Deco managed to make a substitute appearance against Boro, and it remains to be seen whether or not he starts at Stamford Bridge this week. Possible Starting XI: (4-4-2) –Cudicini; Bosingwa, Terry, Alex, Bridge; Belletti, Lampard, Mikel, Kalou; Malouda, Anelka Roma: As opposed to their English opponents, the news on the injury front for the Giallorossi has been slightly more positive in recent times, with the return of several key players. Heading this list of course is Francesco Totti, who managed to play over an hour in the 4-0 hammering against Inter at the weekend. The captain’s ability to get through the clash, as well as his good form throughout, were the only positive signs to come from a match that will go down as one of the club’s most disappointing in recent years. Meanwhile, Marco Cassetti is certain to miss out once again, as he struggles to recover from a thigh injury, and Julio Baptista remains in serious doubt following the reoccurrence of a thigh injury of his own, whilst away on international duty with Brazil. Juan also made a successful return against Inter a few days ago, and along with David Pizarro, the two are looking good to play from the start in this match. Philippe Mexes and Christian Panucci, who both were absent from the Inter match due to suspension, are available for selection, and are certain to take part at some stage of the contest. Possible Starting XI: (4-2-3-1) – Doni; Panucci, Juan, Mexes, Riise; De Rossi; Pizarro; Aquilani, Perrotta, Vucinic; Totti PLAYERS TO WATCH Chelsea – Nicolas Anelka: The French striker will be pivotal to the performance of his side this week, in the absence of Ballack and Drogba in particular. He should be aware of the fact that the opposing defence has had a tendency of leaking goals in recent times, and as a result he should be ready to pounce on a struggling Roma back four this week. Anelka has scored on five occasions this season, including one goal in his side’s 4-0 demolition of Bordeaux on match day one of the competition, and thus he will certainly be hungry to add to his tally at home this week. Roma – Francesco Totti: If Roma are to walk away with anything from this contest, then this man will have to be at his absolute best. It’s a tough ask for a man who made only his first start in over six months just a few days ago, however when you face a side like Chelsea, your big guns simply must fire. Totti’s influential capabilities will be absolutely crucial to his team’s performance on the night, and so it will be very interesting to see what effect his presence has on his team mates. PREDICTION On paper, the sides look relatively even, due to the amount of injuries that Scolari has to deal with in particular. The fact that the sides are squaring off at Stamford Bridge all but rules out a victory for the visitors, meaning that the best result they can attain is a draw from this match. The Blues have been in scintillating form all season, and will be looking to continue their early dominance in the group stage, whilst the Giallorossi will travel to London, knowing that they have nothing to lose, as they go in search of a miracle result. For me however, Chelsea should be too strong on the night, and so I’m tipping them to get up and maintain their strong defensive record in the process. Roma will put up a good fight over the ninety minutes, but goals to Anelka and Lampard will be enough for the Blues. Chelsea 2-0 Roma |

Galliani And Ancelotti: No Mexes Deal
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti and vice president Adriano Galliani have rubbished reports linking Roma's Philippe Mexes with a move to San Siro... France Football claimed the Giallorossi stopper was on his way and ready to sign a deal which would see Marek Jankulovski head the other way and €10m transferred from Milan to Roma's bank account. However, both coach and chief have denied the speculation and they insist the Mexes move is all press talk. "I have never heard of any such deal," said Ancelotti. "Mexes is a Roma player and he will stay at the club." Galliani also had words on the speculation and he has told Jankulovski not to fear of losing his place at the San Siro. "We have already said that there is absolutely nothing in these rumours," added Galliani. "Jankulovski and Bonera should feel tranquil." The Rossoneri are currently in Holland as they prepare to clash with Heerebveen in the UEFA Cup on Thursday night. |
