Serie A

Serie A: Cagliari 2-1 Inter

CAGLIARI - Cagliari came from behind to beat Italian champions Inter 2-1 in the penultimate round of the Serie A season.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave Inter the perfect start with less than eight minutes on the clock but Andrea Cossu equalised in the 34th minute before Robert Acquafresca added a second-half winner at the Stadio Sant'Elia.

José Mourinho made a number of changes to the team that celebrated the Scudetto with a 3-0 win over Siena last weekend, with Toldo starting in goal, Santon, Burdisso and Materazzi returning in defence, Vieira back in midfield, and Jimenez in a supporting role behind front men Ibrahimovic and Cruz.

Cagliari coach Allegri also made switches to the team that lost 2-1 to Reggina in Week 36, with Pisano, Parola, Conti and Cossu all returning to the Rossoblu starting lineup.

After two early chances it was third time lucky for Ibrahimovic, who received from Jimenez and entered te area, protecting the ball from three Cagliari players before firing low under Marchetti for his 23rd Serie A goal this season.

Francesco Toldo, making his second league start between the posts this season, made a diving save from Fini's volley and then kept out a low strike from Cossu, who did better in the 34th minute when he sidestepped Burdisso in the area and slotted past the Inter number one for Cagliari's equaliser.

Jeda was twice denied by Toldo, with Vieira and Ibrahimovic going close for the champions as both teams produced chances before the break.

After a sluggish start to the second half the game sprang to life when Cristian Chivu hooked clear inside the six-yard box to thwart Conti.

The Nerazzurri then had a goal ruled out when Jimenez lifted over Marchetti and accompanied the ball over the line, only for Calvarese to blow for a non-existent foul by Cruz on Canini.

Cagliari took the lead through Acquafresca with less than twenty minutes remaining. The Inter-owned striker rose in the area and found the target with a flicked header from Biondini's inch-perfect cross from the byline.

After bringing on Balotelli for Cruz and Mancini for Jimenez, Mourinho introduced a third fresh pair of legs in the shape of Italian midfielder Francesco Bolzoni, who replaced Chivu to make his Serie A debut for the Nerazzurri and his first appearance of the season.

Bolzoni's former Inter Primavera team-mate Balotelli went closest to a late leveller for the visitors when he cut inside Biondini on the left and sent a terrific shot on to the post.

Vieira wasted a golden chance after being put through by Ibrahimovic, and Bolzoni cannoned over the bar after a clearance from a corner as Cagliari held on for their first home victory over Inter since March 1994.

Serie A: Inter 4-3 Atalanta

MILAN - Italian champions Inter ended the 2008/09 Serie A season with an enthralling 4-3 victory over local rivals Atalanta at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

The Bergamo outfit matched Inter blow for blow in the first half, with Cristiano Doni and Luca Cigarini replying to goals from Sulley Muntari and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Doni gave the visitors a 3-2 lead early in the second half but Inter fought back strong and scored twice in two minutes, with Cambiasso grabbing an equaliser before Ibrahimovic sealed the top scorers' title in style with a magnificent effort.

José Mourinho's players were presented with their gold medals and the Scudetto trophy by Lega Calcio officials in a ceremony after the final whistle.

The Nerazzurri came out for the pre-match warm-up wearing number seven shirts in honour of Luis Figo, who captained the team in his last competitive match as a professional.

And before the match, which kicked off after a minute's silence to remember the Saras employees who lost their lives in the week, Figo was presented with a commemorative plate to mark his career at Inter.

The Portuguese midfielder's last appearance in black and blue lasted 44 minutes. In an emotional farewell he embraced his team-mates and the Atalanta players in the centre circle before coming off to a thunderous applause from the 69,000-strong crowd.

Figo contributed to Inter's opening goal in the sixth minute. Receiving from Zanetti on the right, he held off challenges from two players before delivering a low cross that Consigli cleared somewhat clumsily, allowing Muntari to slot home from ten yards.

The Bergamo Nerazzurri struck a quick equaliser when their captain Doni rose on the edge of the six-yard box to head home a left-wing corner.

Inter were back in front within a matter of minutes, Ibrahimovic collecting Cambiasso's ball over the Atalanta defence and racing unchallenged on goal before firing past Consigli.

In a free-scoring first half Cigarini half-volleyed home from 25 yards to bring the teams on level terms again after Zanetti's headed clearance from a Defendi cross.

After twice coming from behind Atalanta had Inter on the back foot when free kick specialist Doni found the top left corner eight minutes after the restart.

What followed was the best possible reply to critics of Italian football.

Muntari had a brilliant overhead from Balotelli's left-wing cross ruled out for offside, Padoin going close at the other end minutes later with a close-range shot that finished inches wide, and a long-range effort that bounced off the top of the bar.

The woodwork saw more action when Maicon, back in action for the first time since his injury on international duty at the end of March, muscled past his marker before crossing to Crespo whose header came back off the bar.

Balotelli tested Coppola with a fierce long-range right-footer and Inter had a second goal ruled out for offside when Crespo nodded home Ibrahimovic's headed pass from Balotelli's right-wing free kick.

Goals were imminent and they came within 180 seconds. Cambiasso produced the equalising goal when he stabbed home a loose ball after Coppola failed to hold Muntari's shot.

And Ibrahimovic saved the best until last, shrugging off two challenges in the box before fooling Coppola with an exquisite backheeled shot that found the bottom corner.

Luis Figo

Figo: "Thanks to everybody"

MILAN - A visibly emotional Luis Figo spoke on Inter Channel after his last competitive match as a professional. "How could I not be?" said the Portuguese midfielder. "It was an incredible day, it was all perfect and I will remember it for all my life, and it's nice when a player ends his career in this way. It was also beautiful to receive the captain's armband from Javier.

"I don't know what I will do from tomorrow. I will certainly go on holiday with my family, but I will be always be together with Inter because they have given me a lot in these four years and it will be impossible to forget. I didn't think I would stay in this team for so long. I will never forget the affection that I have received since the first day I arrived here, the affection of the president, of my team-mates. Inter helped me start a winning cycle with some extraordinary men."

Italian Super Cup

Italian Super Cup: Inter 1-2 Lazio

BEIJING - Samuel Eto'o volleyed home a cracking goal on his competitive debut for Inter but Lazio held on to stop the Nerazzurri from retaining the Italian Super Cup in front of a 70,000 crowd at the National Stadium.

Mourinho's new-look side outplayed their opponents for the opening sixty minutes of the first sporting event at the Bird's Nest since last summer's Olympic Games, but Matuzalem gave Lazio a shock lead in the 63rd and then Rocchi added a quick second to leave Inter on the back foot.

Summer signings Eto'o, Thiago Motta, Lucio and Milito all made their competitive debuts in Beijing, while the Pirelli logo in Chinese made a return on the Inter shirts for the first ever competitive Italian football match in the China.

The stadium was more black and blue than blue and white and the support of our superb Chinese fans helped the boys make a roaring start, with Stankovic, Eto'o and Milito all producing decent chances before Zarate forced a brilliant save from Julio Cesar.

The best chance of the first half fell to Sulley Muntari, who scored in last year's Super Cup victory over Roma. The Ghanaian latched on to Eto's fantastic through ball but blasted his shot over with the goal gaping.

Captain Zanetti had a chance of his own early in the second half after a powerful run into the box but his effort found the sidenetting. Stankovic then had a 20-yard drive tipped over by Muslera and Lucio headed over a Maicon corner. Inter created chance after chance but the goal wouldn't come, with Stankovic and Milito twice going close either side of a splendid solo move by Eto'o, who rounded Muslera before firing across the face of the goal.

Lazio took the lead against the run of play on 63 minutes. Zarate won his team a free kick, Kolarov took it, Julio Cesar made a punched clearance after a deflection off the wall and Matuzalem stole in to bundle over the line with the aid of his arm.

Rocchi punished a mistake by Chivu to double Inter's lead in the 66th, lobbing over Julio Cesar after a free run on goal.

Mourinho threw on Balotelli and Vieira for Stankovic and Thiago Motta, later replacing Muntari with Suazo. Rallied by the fans, Inter surged forward in search of their four strikers and pulled a goal back with twelve minutes left when Eto'o met Balotelli's through ball and whacked it past Muslera.

Everyone but the referee thought Milito had equalised when he swivelled on to Suazo's pass and fired in but Morganti blew for offside, before a late onslaught on Muslera's goal saw Balotelli, Eto'o, Suazo and Lucio all go close to forcing extra time.

Serie A

Serie A: Inter 1-1 Bari

MILAN - Samuel Eto'o scored from the spot on his Serie A debut at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza as Inter's quest to win a fifth straight league title began with a 1-1 draw against newly promoted Bari.

The Cameroon striker, who netted in his competitive debut for the Nerazzurri against Lazio in the Super Cup earlier this month, tucked home his spot kick early in the second half after a foul on his strike partner Diego Milito.

But Bari, back in the top flight after an eight-year absence, equalised eighteen minutes later through Belarusian international Vitali Kutuzov.

There were few surprises in José Mourinho's starting lineup, with Eto'o and Milito making their Serie A debuts for Inter up front, Thiago Motta his in a diamond midfield with Vieira in the holding role, and Lucio his alongside Materazzi at the centre of defence.

Serie A new boys Bari, without the injured Barreto and the disqualified Meggiorini, relied on Kutuzov and Sforzini to spearhead their attack.

The new-look Inter gave an early sign of their attacking potential when Eto'o's fierce shot forced a difficult parry from Gillet after a one-two with Milito. The Argentine striker should have scored inside the half-hour when he met Vieira's inch-perfect pass over the Bari defence, but he hooked over the bar.

Two chances in thirty minutes were too few for José Mourinho. On came Mario Balotelli for Sulley Muntari with Mario Balotelli and Inter switched from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 with Milito in the centre-forward role.

Inter were immediately more effective in attack, with Maicon going close from Stankovic's pull-back and Milito almost scoring when his cross from the by-line took a deflection off Bonucci.

Balotelli missed by an inch with a low free kick that Milito just failed to divert beyond Gillet, and Thiago Motta blazed a low effort narrowly wide after a pass from Eto'o.

Bari could have taken the lead in added time at the end of the first half but Kutuzov, through on goal with just Julio Cesar to beat, lost control of the ball.

Mourinho made his second substitution at the break, bringing on Quaresma for Vieira as his team went from 4-3-3 to 4-2-4.

Bari were pinned back in their own half and Balotelli sends a low shot wide after collecting a short pass from Eto'o, who was well served on the right by Thiago Motta.

The breakthrough came when Milito was fouled in the box by Cockerels defender Bonucci, with Eto'o sending Gillet the wrong way with his resulting spot kick.

The Inter number nine wasted a gilt-edged chance to increase our lead after receiving a short pass from Milito, firing wide a low shot when totally unmarked in the area.

Kutuzov made amends for his error before the break with Bari's equaliser on 74 minutes, slotting beyond Julio Cesar after collecting Langella's cross from the right.

The visitors had two late chances to snatch all three points, with Langella sending a low shot just wide before Rivas blazed over the bar when it would have been easier to pass to the unmarked Alvarez to his left.
