questions about DVD discs

i have a few questions about DVD discs:
1. I need to know what's the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R?
2. Does one type hold more space than other type?
3. On DVD discs, says 4.7gb, but none of them can hold even 700 mb, why?
4. I have a file of 770 mb, but I have to split them into 3 files of 257mb,
before I can burn them. Is this normal?
5. Other than buying double-layer DVD discs which are considerably expensive,
what are my other options?

STOP burning those DVD's, now. somthing seems to be not compatible. as you said -R +R are 2 different types.
you have your work cut out. in simple worlds the issue here is " end-user error."
you either have software incompatibilities or hardware conflicts.
I'm sorry I can't be of any spesific help, but my suggestion is to invite a friend who has successfully burnt 4.7 gigs over, buy a few beer and BBQ for him and go over what you are doing with him. 2 heads are better than 1.
