Wise Men Come from the Persia and Jesus(a.s)
Wise Men Come from the East
Some time after Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a group of Zoroastrian astrologers and priests traveled to Jerusalem from Persia. They had witnessed an astrologically significant event indicating the birth of a great and powerful king. The Bible does not tell us how many of these "magi" made the trip, although three are almost always depicted in nativity scenes. The magi appeared before King Herod of Judah and asked where this new king was so that they might worship him. Herod was alarmed, and asked in what city the child was born. They replied: In Bethlehem of Judea, for it is written this way by the prophet: "And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are in no way least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel." (2.5-6) The magi were misquoting Micah 5.2: As for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, seemingly insignificant among the clans of Judah-- from you a king will emerge who will rule over Israel on my behalf.... The original quotation was referring to Bethlehem as a specific clan or family, not a city. Of course, I can't blame Matthew if the magi were the ones who misquoted scripture. Herod told the magi to search Bethlehem for the child and return to tell him where he is located. They eventually did find Jesus, where they bowed down and worshipped the child. As you know, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, probably for their connotations of royalty and majesty. Do you see what is happening here? God no longer belongs to a "chosen people". The fifty-sixth chapter is Isaiah foretold a time when God may be approached by people of any nation. Christ is still only a child, and he is being worshipped by Zoroastrians from Persia. God was extending his religion from the confinement of one ethnicity out to all of humanity. This event is known as the Epiphany, and is traditionally celebrated on January sixth. ![]() After being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi went back by another route to their own country. After they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to look for the child to kill him." Then he got up, took the child and his mother during the night, and went to Egypt. He stayed there until Herod died. In this way what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet was fulfilled: "I called my Son out of Egypt." (2.12-15) Here, Matthew is quoting Hosea 11.1: "When Israel was a young man, I loved him like a son, and I summoned my son out of Egypt." In Hosea, God is referring to Israel--not a messiah--as his "son". He was also speaking in the past tense, referring specifically to the time of Moses. Hosea 11.2 continues, "But the more I summoned them, the farther they departed from me. They sacrificed to the Baal idols and burned incense to images." Hosea was not making any prophecies regarding Jesus. When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became enraged. He sent men to kill all the children in Bethlehem and throughout the surrounding region from the age of two and under, according to the time he had learned from the wise men. Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud wailing, *****l (Israel's wife) weeping for her children, and she did not want to be comforted, because they were gone." (2.16-1 ![]() But Jeremiah was referring to the Babylonian exile, not the infanticide of King Herod. Matthew sucks so badly at quoting the Old Testament! Also, there is no historical record outside the Bible of such an extreme massacre occurring in Bethlehem. Maybe an advisor was able to change Herod's mind about the pogrom. It should be pointed out that the magi probably did not visit Jesus until he was as old as two--Herod allegedly ordered had all children age two and under to be killed. Matthew also tells us that the magi went into a "house" (2.11)--not a manger--where they found Mary with Jesus. Traditional nativity scenes attempt to combine two separate events that could have occurred as far as two years apart. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, telling him it was safe to go up to Israel. The family moved to a small village called Nazareth, in the Israeli region of Galilee. "Then what had been spoken by the prophets was fulfilled, that Jesus would be called a Nazarene." (2.23) Scholars aren't sure what Matt is even trying to quote here! In the next chapter, Jesus is an adult. Matthew does not reveal any details about the intervening years.
