Question re Iranian culture - Page 2

Hi Last Breath,

I understand what you are saying, but I still think it is an immoral thing (sigheh). Sigheh isn't practiced in western countries - its practiced in Iran, where women are clearly disadvantaged. Also women work with their emotions and inutions, men can be quite cold and ruthless. Even if a woman participates in a sigheh, in the end, she is the one who pays the price. she pays through emotional problems, guilt, feelings of beeaberooi, feelings of shame . Why even participate in sigheh if you love each other - why not just get married. Or if marriage isn't for you then live together - But you see this can happen in Western Cultures, not in Iran where god forbid if two people live togther they get into all sorts of legal troubles. So our dear islamic regime has decided that in order to do the same living together and having sex, they perform sigheh and BANG you are saved from doing something wrong. Who gives the Mullah the right to say what is right or wrong and that sigheh absolves you from living together and having sex before marriage. Is the MUllah MOhammad or GOd? What right does he have to pur forward such laws. And show me how a God, kind and just would allow such atrocities in any religion?

I totally agree with you..you couldnt be more true! but unfortunalty our country is being ruled by these people so what can we do abt it?
If only there was a way to correct all of this but for now i guess there isnt anything but just accepting and not actually believing or abiding..it is us who choose what is right and wrong and the person who chooses something like this is to blame..one more thing i would like to mention here that from what i have read so far no one else has brought this argument forward..many older men make younger girls "siighe" just to use them and the girls have no choice because they are either forced by their parents who need the money or she has simply sold her self because she needs money! it can be used as a kind of "lawful" prostetution....unfortunatly many men offer women or their familes a lot of money to make her or their daughter his "siighe".

Its sad ins't it that women get to such desperate levels to have to sell themselves legally, or to forcefully sell their daughters or those females legally in their care. What corrupt government and legal insitutions Iran must have currently to allow such things - its basically a legally way to further abuse and deman women in Iran.

I have never ever been to Iran - although I hear beautiful stories from parents about pre-revolutions times. My parents left before the revolution when I was 3 yrs old and my reading and writing is basically at zero, but I still love the culture and try and keep abreast with the news of whats happening in Iran etc... And yet I get really sad and actually embarrassed that I come from a country that has sunk so low. Maybe my next question is naive, but why don't the Iranians oppose these laws and the government - they once did which resulted in the revolution.
