Question re Iranian culture

can someone tell me what sigheh means? Although I am Iranian, I have been out of Iran since 3 and have not had many opportunities to mix with Iranian communities, hence my knowledge of Iranian culture is not that great. I would appreciate any feedback.

Hi,
just to add to the detail;
There are 2 types of Sighe (Literally means Aghd or contract):
1- Permanent
2- Temporary

Whats been generally known as Sighe (by itself) is the second type.

By the way this isnt something that is recommended or urged upon.
And is not for the sole purpose you mentioned. On the contrary, what is recommended is permanent marriage and commitment.

It rather serves as an option to the ones who require it.
Natural human desires should be fulfilled in a correct manner ... There are people who -for any reason- just cant marry or commit to long term relationships, what are they supposed to do?
This way, they are in a kind of contract and limited rather than be free to do whatever whenever.

Its mostly used for couples to get to know one another before marriage ...
But this does not cover up certain realities we face in our society (in Iran), where -more often- men take advantage of this rule and misuse it, which is wrong. And lets not forget that the consent of both parties are necessary so it goes both ways...

Hi Last Breath,

I still think it is not a very nice custome - imagine two people having sex through sigheh and then the guy changing his mind after he has had a taste and think no thanks - no way, I still think in the society we live in, women are disadvantaged by this sigheh thing!!

Hi Poppy,

I completely agree!
It shouldnt be a custom and it isnt!

There are somethings that arent recommended in natural circumstances, but are an option when there is no other choice left.

Like choosing to smoke, instead of taking drugs. (for an addict)

Also, Sighe is something clear for both the Man and the Woman!
They both know what they are getting into . . . So the Woman isnt the only victim. They both have agreed and know the consequences.

Other than that, Sighe isnt necessarily just for having intercourse.
Its just a way to make two people Mahram.
What happens between them, is their own choice and has nothing to do with Sighe itself.

Again, endorsing Sighe on its own is not accepted by Islamic teachings nor any logical mind for that matter.

So yes . . . The act you mentioned is inadmissible and unacceptable. But who is to blame?

The Law?
Or The person misusing/taking advantage of it?
Or The person who predicts the outcome and still accepts?

I believe, the last two ... But that's just my opinion.

EDIT: Spelling mistake.
