UK diplomats in Tehran fourth highest in Middle East

UK Diplomats-Middle East
The British Foreign Office has a total of 27 diplomats posted to Tehran, the joint fourth largest in the Middle East region, according to official figures.

In a written reply to parliament published Monday, Foreign Secretary David Miliband listed Baghdad and Cairo as the highest with 33 diplomats each, followed by Riyadh with 29. Amman is also fourth with 27.

The largest number of British diplomats in a single country is 44 in Iraq, with 11 also stationed in Basra. There are also five more in Jeddah bringing the total in Saudi Arabia to 34, the same as Egypt where there is a further UK diplomat in Alexandria.

Combined together, there are 29 in the United Arab Emirates, with 26 in Dubai and 13 in Abu Dhabi, and 27 in the occupied territories, 15 in Tel Aviv and 12 in Jerusalem.

Miliband pointed out that the figures are only those posted from the Foreign Office and said that there was also staff from other ministries, including the Department for International Development.

The figures come as the Foreign Office is proposing to increase its frontline diplomatic staff in the Middle East and South Asia by 30 per cent.

Last week, Miliband confirmed Britain would transfer a "proportion of diplomatic staff from Europe and the Americas to Asia, the Middle East and other parts of the world, while continuing to sustain our global flexibility and reach."
