[CL] Roma - Man United / Chelsea - Valencia Highlights
AS ROMA 2-1 MANCHESTER UNITED
Dava beyne Tamashachia va Police ![]() CHELSEA 1-1 VALENCIA Player Rating AS ROMA - MANCHESTER UNITED AS ROMA Alexander Doni (6): Another solid performance from a Brazilian famed for anything but back in his native land, although he was helpless in Rooney’s goal. His main shortcoming was his somewhat differently-accurate timing as he came out badly for crosses, corners and free kicks. Marco Cassetti (5): Rooney ran rings around Cassetti, but the Italian back did better facing Ryan Giggs, surgical interceptions before the break fading out in the second half as the player looked tired. Cristian Chivu (7): He’s a perfect foil for the rather carefree Mexes, the Romanian’s tactical awareness holding the Roma rearguard together. His sober control of the defense is bound to stir up yet more transfer interest with the silly season on its way. Philippe Mexes (5): Although his only attempt to ape the goal against Milan went astray in the first minute, the Frenchman was great in the air but could be accused of being a little too eager to join in a forward move at the expense of tactical rigour. Christian Panucci (5): A characteristic performance from the experienced wing-back, showing his habitual pace and drive to the baseline, but failing to really make an incisive difference to flanking attacks and a little too slow in Rooney’s goal Daniele De Rossi (5): A good all-round performance without much sparkle from the holding midfielder, protecting the rearguard from Mexes’ moves out of position, although perhaps sinning in his tendency to wallop in a long shot rather than pass to a team-mate. Alessandro Mancini (7): He ran rings around a dazzled John O’Shea and showed his dribbling skills to good effect. The assists in the goals were the cherry on top of a decisive performance from the man who always seems to dribble a seleção call-up. Simone Perrotta (6): An attacking bent marked his presence in the Giallorossi midfield, although a rather avoidable yellow card means that Perotta will be out of the second leg at Old Trafford along with Scholes. Rodrigo Taddei (6): His best moment came with the first goal of the night, despite Wes Brown’s inadvertent help in throwing Van de Sar the wrong way, and he looked dangerous in support of Totti, although could have tried a few more attempts on target given his luck tonight. Christian Wilhelmsson (5): He was Spalletti’s surprise package in a 4-1-4-1 that saw De Rossi left alone in defensive midfield with the number 4 giving more pace on the wing. The Swede mixed good runs forward with other times where he didn’t seem to know how to dovetail with his team-mates. Francesco Totti (7): Alex Ferguson was left with a little to remember the Giallorossi captain by, although there was no thumb-sucking at the Olímpico. Despite the lack of a goal, Totti’s mobility made marking him a nightmare for the guests and he combined well with Mancini in the first goal. Mirko Vucinic (7): Gained the aura of 'supersub' by coming on and pouncing on Van der Saar’s half-save to score Roma’s second. He was on the verge of netting a brace, but the Montenegrin has to be pleased with a memorable entrance and lasting effect on the result. MANCHESTER UNITED Edwin Van der Saar (6): The lanky Dutchman marked his presence with a couple of timely – yet hardly spectacular interventions – plus a hand in setting up United’s goal, but his sub-par parry directly led to Roma’s second goal. If he’d have decided to cede a corner by pushing it over the Red Devils could be prouder of a 1-1 final score. Wes Brown (6): Covering for the injured Nemanja Vidic, Brown was up to the task of stemming the Roman tide of attacks and made Vidic’s absence less crucial to the final score. Rio Ferdinand (5): Another typical performance from the man who always seems to flirt with greatness but be chained down by basic errors. Brown looked more solid as Rio held onto the ball and was guilty of a few crude tackles. Gabriel Heinze (6): His first half performance was of a high calibre, although the second half saw that the Argentine needs to work on his fitness or spread his efforts out more evenly as the first half seemed to exhaust him. John O'Shea (4): Although he was played out of his habitual position, the Red Devil’s life was made hell by Mancini’s stopovers and lightning dribbles. Perhaps a rating that owes more to Ferguson’s fielding of the player than the player’s innate capabilities. Michael Carrick (6): He was in the thick of the action against a Roman midfield that often pitted five players in close proximity to the Man U man. His passes to Rooney and Ronaldo were as efficient as his general performance: solid, not shiny. Ryan Giggs (5): A sub-par performance from the usually inspired and inspiring Welshman and rather disappointing that he didn’t shoulder more of the attacking burden given his seniority in the Manchester squad. Still – can’t win ‘em all. Cristiano Ronaldo (7): A good all-round showing by the coveted number 7, although nothing to win any headlines – except his lack of the diving that all and sundry predicted he would resort to. He showed ambition and drive in his runs forward from start to finish but lacked that critical spark. Paul Scholes (3): Although it would be going too far to say that he’s got a budding career in butchery after he retires from football, Scholes’ tackling was crude and called forth two yellows that changed the face of the match. His absence in the return leg will be a real headache for the Scottish tactician. Ole Gunnar Soljskaer (6): Soljskaer played well in Italy, although clearly not with the killer instinct of old, although he did supply Wayne Rooney with the equaliser on a silver platter. Wayne Rooney (7): Excellent work from a man who’s failed to shine much in Europe after his Fenerbahçe debut hat-trick left to a tall order to follow for the number 8. He was cool-headed in the face of any provocation, mucked in with the rest with defensive duties after the team were down to ten men and scored what could be a crucial away goal. Darren Fletcher (6): Some quibble about Fergie’s choice when it came to the substitution, but the lad came out and did what was asked of him, which was top clog up Roma’s midfield arteries and avoid the damage worsening. Louis Saha (4): Saha came on and failed to impress with a series of unnecessary fouls and nervy interventions. A poor showing from the man who is United’s top scorer in European competition this season. |

Player Ratings: Chelsea - Valencia
Chelsea Cech 5.5 - Not a bad performance, but any time someone scores from 35 yards out, no matter how well, some blame has to lie with the goal-keeeper. Diarra 5 - Decent offensive play, but Silva and Vicente caused problems in his territory. Nowhere in sight when Silva - in acres of space - let rip that scorcher. Carvalho 6.5 - A consistent display. Terry 7.5 - Marshalled the defence very well, and barely put a foot wrong. David Villa was not a factor! Obi Mikel 5 - Looked out of depth after having such an impact against Porto. Ballack 8 - A quality midfield display to orchestrate Chelsea's attack. Great defensive cover too. Lampard 7 - Combined well with Ballack as the Blues pressed forward. However, a lot of his free-kicks and corners were below par. Kalou 6 - Started off strong, even rattling the bar with an early shot. Faded as the game progressed. Shevchenko 6.5 - Good movement in attack, and a decent supporting role! Drogba 8 - Another energetic, high-octane performance. Was never too far away from causing Valencia problems. Superbly taken goal as well! Valencia Canizares 4 - Poor showing. Poor positioning for the goal, and poor judgement in the air. Miguel 7 - Did not do as much as was expected of him in attack, but left little to question with his defensive work. Ayala 7 - Guilty of brinkmanship, but most certainly did the business for Los Che. Moretti 6 - Nothing to shout about, but the left back won't be embarrassed about this make-shift role of his. Del Horno 5.5 - Did not give Chelsea many reasons to believe they should have kept him. Albiol 8 - The promising Spanish U-21 international was great in the middle, get most things right, and showing up wherever he was needed. Albelda 6.5 - Like Ayala, brinkmanship just about the did the business. Lost the plot a bit towards the end, though. Joaquin 5 - Disappointing! Silva 7.5 - Ever-dangerous during the first 70 minutes, but saw little of the ball after that. And what a strike! Vicente 6.5 - Good work on the left before being injured. David Villa 5.5 - Los Che will have expected a lot more from him. |
