Liverpool - Chelsea: A Tactical Look
The all-Premiership Champions League semi-final is fascinatingly poised with Chelsea going to Anfield with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg. Chelsea's next 90 minutes are effectively the most important of their history as they attempt to reach their first ever Champions League final.
Mourinho has won the competition before, but he is a man that seeks to be remembered as the special one and if he is to leave in the summer he really must win the Champions League if he is to go down in history. There are some massive decisions to be made by Mourinho as Chelsea look to get past the semi-final at the third time of asking. They have a 1-0 lead but will this be enough and should it be defended? That is ultimately the key question. The answer may have been made for Mourinho as he has lost Ricardo Carvalho for the match and thus are not likely to be the most defensively sound, especially in the pressure cooker of Anfield. Chelsea conceded twice from set-pieces against Bolton on Saturday as their Premiership aspirations fell apart and as much as John Terry is a rock and Petr Cech is a brilliant goalkeeper I do not believes the Blues are defensively sound. Attempting to keep out Liverpool is far too risky and the opposite strategy would be more beneficial as an away goal would mean Liverpool need to score three. Liverpool will not take risks immediately as this is not their style, but as soon as minutes start to tick by they will have to gamble and it would therefore be in Chelsea's interests to hit them with their attacking might. The away goal becomes so vital in this situation and Liverpool will know they can't afford to concede first, if at all. However, their central midfield duo of Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso will surely be given more of an attacking license than they were at Stamford Bridge. Benitez is sure to name Peter Crouch in attack alongside Dirk Kuyt and it will be hoped that the tall striker can cause havoc in Chelsea's Carvalho-less defence. It has been clear this season that the Blues are vulnerable when not at full strength at the back. For all their wealth and valuable players they are lacking in centre-backs and Liverpool will centre their attention on this. When the teams met at Anfield earlier this season Liverpool won 2-0 and on that day Chelsea were without Carvalho and played Paulo Ferreira in the middle. It is likely to be Michael Essien, which should be an improvement, but we have seen this season that it is not the Ghanaian's best position. Carvalho isn't the only player that is injured for the Blues, but the loss of Michael Ballack is much less significant. |
