MADRID, May 6 (Reuters) - Former club captain Pep Guardiola will replace Frank Rijkaard as Barcelona coach at the end of the season, Spanish media reported on Tuesday.
Newspapers said that Barcelona's delegate commission, which includes club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Txiki Begiristain, had met on Monday and recommended that Guardiola should replace Rijkaard as first team coach.
Barcelona-based daily Sport said the decision would be ratified by the rest of the board and made official at the end of the season.
The club has said it will not comment on possible changes until the season is over.
Rijkaard, whose contract runs to 2009, has denied reports he will step down as coach in the wake of the team's failure to win any silverware over the past two seasons.
Local-born Guardiola made his name at Barcelona as a cultured midfielder in the early 1990s when Johan Cruyff was manager.
He quickly established himself as a favourite at the Nou Camp and became one of the key players in Cruyff's so-called "Dream team" which won four consecutive league titles between 1991 and 1994 and the European Cup in 1992.
He was part of the Spain side that won the gold medal in the Barcelona Olympics and won 47 caps for the senior national team.
Guardiola left Barcelona in 2001 to join Serie A side Brescia but his career in Italy was disrupted when he tested positive for nandrolone in November 2001.
He served a four-month ban but strenuously denied any offence and went through the courts to clear his name, finally winning his case in October last year.
After spells in Qatar and Mexico, Guardiola announced his retirement as a player in Nov. 2006. He was appointed coach of Barcelona's B side last June.
AC Milan have completed the signing of Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini on a four-year contract - but the club expect to miss out on Chelsea's Didier Drogba.
Flamini is out of contract with the Gunners at the end of the season and today agreed to join the Italian club in a deal which will begin on July 1.
Milan have also been strongly linked with Chelsea striker Drogba in Europe but Milan sporting director Ariedo Braida does not anticipate the Ivory Coast forward joining Flamini at the San Siro this summer.
He told PA Sport: 'Drogba is a very interesting player that many clubs would want to have but he is under contract at Chelsea and I believe he will remain at Chelsea next season.'
As for France international Flamini, Braida revealed Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti is a great admirer of the 24-year-old.
'I have to say Flamini was a player that Ancelotti really wanted and Milan is like a family, where decisions are made jointly,' he said.
Arsenal had hoped Flamini would agree a deal to stay at the Emirates Stadium, but they always knew it would be difficult with outfits like Juventus and Milan coveting the player.
'Flamini is not an unknown player,' said Braida. 'Just like Didier Drogba isn't.
'I'm not surprised by his talent and I assume several teams would have wanted his services.
'Although no negotiations are ever easy, it wasn't difficult to convince Flamini to join Milan.
'Flamini has made a choice as his contract with Arsenal is coming to an end and we are delighted he has chosen Milan.
'He is a very good player and he can offer a lot to the team.'
Flamini expressed his joy at the move after finalising terms with the Serie A outfit.
'I am extremely happy. Thanks a million,' he said.
Despite the offer of a lucrative new five-year deal - understood to be worth around £55,000-a-week - from the north London club, Flamini's head was turned by Milan's interest.
Juventus were also reported to be tracking the player, who has formed a fine partnership with Cesc Fabregas this season after looking to be on his way out of the club at the end of the last campaign.
He put in an impressive performance at the San Siro as Arsene Wenger's team knocked Milan out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage in March.
It is understood the former Marseille man said his goodbyes to some staff as he left the car park after yesterday's home win over Everton in the Premier League.
He will compete for a place in the Rossoneri midfield with Brazil star Kaka and the Italy trio of Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini.
Milan beat city rivals Inter Milan 2-1 today to climb into the final qualifying place for the Champions League, leapfrogging Fiorentina who lost 2-1 at Cagliari.
Flamini's last match as an Arsenal player will be Sunday's Premier League trip to Sunderland.

Reportedly, Man Utd are ready to start talk with Wigan for Honduran international Wilson Palacios.
The 23-year old midfielder has made a name for himself in the Premiership after just one season, and Palacios was initially recommended to Wigan manager Steve Bruce by Aresene Wenger after Arsenal had him on trial first.
Bruce admits it will be hard to hold on to him when a club of United’s stature come knocking on the door. According to The Sun, United will sit down with Wigan next week to thrash out an £8million deal for Palacios.
Wigan want Egypt star
The Premiership season has not ended yet, but that have not stopped Premiership sides to target new players for next season. It has been reported that Wigan manager Steve Bruce is looking to add Egypt star striker Amr Zaki to their ranks over the next few weeks.
Wigan secured their Premiership status with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa last Saturday, and now Bruce is eager to strengthen his squad for next season.
25-year old Zaki, has scored 21 goals in 40 internationals, and currently plays for Egyptian Side El Zamalek.
Fiorentina after Stuttgart’s Mario Gomez
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Fiorentina have opened talks to land Stuttgart’s 22-year old striker Mario Gomez. The German international managed to net 16 goals for his side this season.
The striker, who comes from a German-Spanish descent, is one of the most talented strikers to come out of Germany for quite some time.
A hot South American prospect, Bruno
20-year old Uruguayan startlet Bruno Fornaroli, one of the hottest young players in South America, has scored 13 goals this season for his side Nacional.
Recently West Ham joined the race for his signature, a race that already consisted of clubs like Totteham, Napoli and Lazio.
Spurs, through their number two Gus Poyet who is also from Uruguay, have shown an interest whilst Napoli and Lazio have already held talks about a possible deal.
Fornaroli is currently in the process of gaining an EU passport, which will be a major part of any possible move.
Lyon’s Ben Arfa still on Wenger’s list
With Flamini departuring the club for AC Milan and the speculation surrounding Hleb’s future in the club in doubt with Inter Milan chasing his signature, Wenger is looking to reinforce his midfield.
It has been mentioned that Ben Afra of Olympique Lyon is one of Wenger’s top targets for next season. Ben Arfa is still to sign a new contract with Lyon and is also confirmed target for Manchester United.
Wenger is expected to stick to his philosophy of developing emerging young players and the 20-year old Ben Arfa would make a perfect acquistion.
Barcelona enter race for Villa
Barcelona and Real Madrid are battling for the signature of Valencia star David Villa.
DiarioSport says Barca sports director Txiki Begiristain discussed signing the Spain international with board members during a marathon meeting yesterday, which among many points included an agreement over the appointment of Pep Guardiola as coach for next season.
Villa has stated previously that his prefered destination would be playing for the champions Real Madrid. Now when Barcelona seem to have entered the race, Villa might have a change of heart.
Liverpool to offer £8M for Barcelona’s Abidal
It has been reported that Liverpool are launching an £8 million bid for Barcelona fullback Eric Abidal.
The Daily Mail says Reds boss Rafa Benitez has set his sights on France international left-back Abidal, 28, who has been a regular for Barca since his arrival from Lyon last summer.
This is further indication that John Arne Riise might be leaving Anfield soon. New destinations mentioned are Newcastle and Portsmouth.
Carr out as Keegan starts Newcastle clear-out
Kevin Keegan started his Newcastle clear-out on Tuesday as Stephen Carr, Peter Ramage and Australian youngster James Troisi were told they are free to leave the Premier League club.
Keegan wants to overhaul his squad after Newcastle once again underachieved this season and Republic of Ireland right-back Carr is the first high-profile casualty.
The former Tottenham star is joined at the St James' Park exit door by centre-back Ramage, who is leaving in search of regular first-team football and Troisi, who will play for Australia at the Olympics later this year.
“We wanted to keep Ramage, but he wants to play regular football, and I couldn't guarantee that here,” Keegan told Newcastle's website.
“He goes with our best wishes, as does Stephen Carr, who's been a great pro for this club. He wasn't offered a contract and I explained the reasons why.
“James Troisi has also gone. He has gone to play for Australia in the Olympics, but he has not been offered a contract.”
The Blues supremo held negotiations with the defender's representative, and brother, René Ramos during the basketball Euroleague Final Four in the Spanish capital, according to El Mundo Deportivo.
An offer of €7m-per-year after tax was laid on the table which would more than double Ramos' current deal at Madrid which sees him take home around €3m-a-season.
Chelsea are also prepared to shell out a huge transfer fee to land their man, if the report is to be believed, and Ramón Calderón is said to be interested with the funds being able to be used to bolster the squad during the summer.
Barça Add Adebayor To Summer List
The lofty Arsenal striker has been given several good reports by the Catalan club's scouting netweork in England and Txiki Begiristain is ready to put his name to the board, according to El Mundo Deportivo.
Along with Adebayor on the list of forwards are Olympique Lyonnais starlet Karim Benzema, who has committed himself to the French club for another season, and Valencia's David Villa.
Didier Drogba has also been mentioned, but it is now believed that Barça consider that they do not want to bring in another player who is already 30 for the money that he will cost.
Adebayor would not be cheap, but at 24 he could be a shrewd investment because the Blaugrana have tried and failed to incorporate powerful strikers in their side without much success.
Maxi López was seen as too slow and slightly cumbersome, but the Togolese goalscorer is quick both in the air and on the ground and would be a strong target for the wide players.
Henry and Adebayor had a mixed relationship during their time together at Arsenal and the Frenchman's opinion will certainly be sought about the merits of making an approach for his former team-mate.
---After two seasons on FC Barcelona’s bench, the ex-Chelsea star Eidur Gudjohnsen might return to the Premier League. Portsmouth and Newcastle have expressed their interest for his signature and are looking to snatch him at at cut-down price.
---Manchester City lead the chase to sign Mexican wonderkid Giovani Dos Santos from Barcelona. The 18-year old has already won 5 caps for his country Mexico, and seems to be one of the first victims in the major the squad shake-up that is expected this summer in Barcelona. It is believed Barca are willing to let Giovani go for 10 million euros (£7.8million).
---Shola Ameobi is set to leave Newcastle this summer. Permier League newcomers Stoke is said to have tabled a bid of £4million that has been accepted, but Ameboi is set to snub a move to Stoke.
---Manchester United are ready to turn to long-time target Klaas-Jan Huntelaar of Ajax if they fail to land Tottenham’s Dimitar Berbatov. It’s has been reported that Tottenham will create a big-money auction if they were to let go of their Bulgarian star striker who has only been with them for one season.
---Recent reports have claimed that Manchester City have approached Scoloari to replace Sven-Goran Eriksson as manager while Eriksson met representatives of Benfica who wants him as their new manager. This have alerted many clubs and Chelsea are ready to reignite their interest in Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards.
Portsmouth after Benfica defender Luisao
It has been reported that Sol Cambell will be leaving Portsmouth this summer and they are already looking for a replacement. Brazilian international Luisao is the player that has been rumored to replace Cambell.
Campbell, who is out of contract this summer, has never hidden his desire to play abroad. Long-term admirer Villarreal are still keen on attaining the services of Cambell, so the chances are good that he will leave Pompey.
Benfica have set the fee at £12million as a starting point for negotiations.
Tottenham in talks with Barcelona over Eto´o - report
English first division side Tottenham are in talks with Barcelona over the Spanish giant's Cameroonian international striker Samuel Eto'o, sports daily Marca reported Wednesday.
“Tottenham's next target is clear, it is Samuel Eto'o,” the newspaper said, adding the English club has already approached Barcelona “to sound out the possibility of carrying out this recruitment”.
Barcelona “has shown itself to be more than welcoming and the two sides have agreed to meet next week to negotiate the transfer,” the newspaper added without citing sources.
The Catalan club will “not start discussions below the bar of 35 million euros (54 million dollars)” for the three-time African Player of the Year, it added.
“For Barcelona the sale of one of its stars is important as it would allow it to finance the shake-up that it wants to carry out in the locker-room” following its second straight season without a trophy, the newspaper said.
Last month Eto'o, who has a contract with Barcelona until 2010, threatened to quit the Spanish giants next season if their title drought continues.
“If things carry on next season like this, well, I want to win titles and if I can't do that here, then it will be an another club,” he told Catalan radio station RAC1, adding if he left the club he would also leave Spain.
The 27-year-old joined Barcelona from Mallorca in 2004 for a transfer fee of 24 million euros.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez understands that Peter Crouch might be getting itchy feet as his season as an Anfield fringe player nears its end, but insists that he won't be a bargain signing for potential suitors.
In fact, the Spaniard appears to value the beanpole striker higher than he does long-time target Gareth Barry, about whose availability he has held talks with Aston Villa.
"Crouch wants to play every week but knows he must fight it out with Fernando Torres," Benitez insisted.
"We keep seeing Portsmouth linked with the player but we have had no offer as yet.
"A £15m price tag would not be unreasonable."
Benitez also reiterated that Harry Kewell is set for the exit door, revealing: "We have tried to come to an agreement with the player and his agent, but that has not been possible.
"Kewell will leave the club at the end of his contract."
Villa have reacted angrily to Reds-instigated swap deals for Barry. Rafa said on the matter: "I have spoken to Martin O'Neill, he knows my ideas.
"But we agreed to wait until the end of the season for any more discussions."
Crouch is said to covet a bumper wage packet of £80,000-a-week if he's to consider a summer switch.
FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that Josep 'Pep' Guardiola is to be the new first team coach at Camp Nou, with Frank Rijkaard set to leave the club...
Guardiola Named New Barça Boss
FC Barcelona released a brief, official statement within the last hour to the effect that Frank Rijkaard would part company with the club at the end of the season, with current reserve team coach Pep Guardiola set to take his place.
The club's official website reported:
"[President] Joan Laporta has announced that Frank Rijkaard will end his career at the club at the end of this current 2007/08 season. Josep Buardiola, current coach of Barça B, has been picked as his replacement on the bench of FC Barcelona.
"After a meeting of the Board of Directors, the president Joan Laporta appeared before the media to announce the takeover on the bench of the first team of FC Barcelona at the end of the season. On June 30, Frank Rijkaard will no longer be coach of FC Barcelona and Josep Guardiola will be his replacement."
As such, Rijkaard has just two more games in charge before he leaves Camp Nou for the last time.
The Announcement
Laporta's declaration was later published, with the president stating that the current 'cycle' had come to an end and that, despite Rijkaard's past successes, it's time for a new approach.
Offering some parting compliments, he said of Frank, "He has done an excellent job and has had an excellent performance. We will remember Frank Rijkaard as the man that led the team to recovery and in three years took them to glory in Paris [in the Champions League].
"He had an exceptional balance of trophies that must not be obscured by the results of the last two seasons. One can conclude that Frank Rijkaard makes history."
However, the president contended that "[Frank] has completed a cycle and the results are not with him now. Despite attempts, the mistakes detected last season were not corrected."
As for the parting, he said that Frank accepted the news with dignity when informed after morning training.
"He has been very gracious, and it was a very emotional time," said Laporta. "I find it hard to say anything bad of him."
Looking Ahead
Offering his thoughts on Guardiola's appointment, the chief continued, "We believe in Guardiola to lead the need sporting project. This will ensure the continuity of the renewed football ideology that has led us to success.
"He has the knowledge, enthusiasm, self-confidence, and respect of the club needed."
Adding that it was a "unanimous" decision from the board to appoint the Barça B coach, Laporta went on to add a bit of personal reflection to proceedings.
"I am also responsible," he said. "Surely not all our decisions were sound. Some of our ideas have not worked. And the playres have not responded to the expectations that we and the coach had... we had planned one of the best squads in the world."
Open Secret
It's been something of an open secret that the Dutchman's days were numbered as he steered Barça to a second successive season without any trophies, but Wednesday night's shocking 4-1 loss to arch-rivals Real Madrid seems to have sealed the deal.
Rijkaard arrived in Catalunya in 2003, taking the blaugrana to second place in his debut season and to two successive Liga titles after that. What's more, in 2006 he completed the historic League and European Cup double with a famous win over Arsenal.
However, things began to sour last season as the blaugrana slipped away from a dominant position at the top of the table to help Real Madrid seize the title, and this year there was not even a meaningful battle as the Bernabéu side twice beat the blaugrana. Currently, Barça sit a massive 17 points behind their eternal enemies. Additionally, they can no longer finish second, meaning that they must pre-qualify for next season's Champions League.
Thus despite bright beginnings for the former Dutch international, his position at Camp Nou had clearly become untenable. This has been known essentially since Barcelona dropped out of the title race, but was only really solidified over the last week, during which time an aide of Frank's accidentally spilled the beans on a personal blog.
The club kept silent about this revelation, but today, after the Board meeting, decided to confirm what was already known.
Guardiola's The Man
Just as Rijkaard's departure was expected, so too was 'Pep' Guardiola's coronation as new boss. The heir apparent has around a year of coaching experience to his name, having taken over at FC Barcelona 'B' in time for the 2007-08 season.
The former Spanish international midfielder has steered the second string to first place in the Tercera División Grupo 5 - part of the fourth tier of Spanish football - where they look likely to make an immediate return to the Segunda B.
In recent weeks Pep has been charged with the task of submitting a report on his coaching style to the board (more details here) and has also been rumoured to have provided the directors with a list of players that he wishes to keep, as well as those whom he'd sooner discard (more details here.)
Apparently he has done enough to convince the top brass that he has what it takes, and in doing so has beaten off competition from the likes of Michael Laudrup, the Getafe manager.
Whether or not Pep will be involved with first team duties between now and the end of the campaign remains to be seen, as is whether or not Rijkaard opts to leave his post prior to the official handover date of June 30, which coincides with the time of most contractual renewals and conclusions.
