Ahli pick up first point after drab draw with Saba

QOM: UAE’s Al Ahli picked up their first point of the AFC Champions League campaign when they emerged from their Group A clash with Iran’s Saba Battery with a scoreless draw on Tuesday evening.

Neither team created much in front of goal in a disappointing encounter at the Yadegar-E-Emam Stadium, with Al Ahli claiming a point following their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Pakhtakor last week.

The draw was Saba Battery’s second in a row after they earned a point in Riyadh thanks to a 1-1 draw with Al Hilal.

There was little between the teams in the opening 40 minutes, but with five minutes remaining in the first half Saba Battery started to crank up the pressure on the visitors.

With three minutes left on the clock, Gholamreza Rezaei was just wide of the target with his header with goalkeeper Obaid Al Suwaidi well beaten.

Two minutes later, Sheys Razaei almost caught Al Suwaidi out with a miss-hit cross that came back off the goalkeeper’s left post while seconds later Mohsen Bayat’s diving header was straight into Al Suwaidi’s arms.

After failing to impress in the opening half, Al Ahli made more of the running at the start of the second half.

Just eight minutes after the resumption, the UAE club’s Iranian striker Milad Meidavoudi, with time and space to shoot, flashed his effort wide of the target when he had the goal at his mercy.

At the other end, Gholamreza Rezaei just failed to make a strong enough connection following Adel Kolahkaj’s corner to break the deadlock, the Iran international glancing his header well wide of the target.

Seventeen minutes from time, Saba Battery’s inability to make their territorial advantage count almost proved costly thanks to a handling error by goalkeeper Almir Tolja.

Former Gamba Osaka striker Bare laid the ball off to his Brazilian compatriot Cesar, whose cross was fumbled by the keeper under pressure from Ahmad Khalil only for the AFC Youth Player of the Year to swing and miss the ball, allowing a relieved Tolja to collect.

From there, the game fizzled out, leaving both teams still looking for their first win of their AFC Champions League campaigns.

Al Shabab 0-0 Piroozi: Spoils shared in Saudi

Piroozi (in red) picked up a point in Saudi Arabia thanks to a goalless draw with Al Shabab. (AFP)
RIYADH – Saudi Arabia’s Al Shabab shared a tightly contested goalless draw with fellow opening day winners Piroozi of Iran in their Group B encounter on Tuesday.

Al Shabab recorded a 3-1 win in Qatar over Al Gharafa last week and Piroozi beat Sharjah of the United Arab Emirates by the same score but neither side was able to find the crucial breakthrough at the King Fahd International Stadium.

The result kept the two sides a point clear of Al Gharafa, who won 2-0 at Sharjah earlier in the evening.

Piroozi captain Karim Bagheri had a glorious chance to open the scoring early on but after the ball dropped for the unmarked midfielder on the penalty spot, he only managed to fire into the grateful arms of Al Shabab goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah despite having the goal at his mercy.

The home side enjoyed more of the possession but failed to create a clear chance as Abdullah Shuhail attempted to find the bottom corner from the edge of the area, only to see his curling right-footed effort drift the wrong side of the upright with Alireza Haghighi scrambling across his goal.

At the other end Alireza Vahedinikbakht rose highest to meet a corner, but Waleed was alert to make the low save.

Five minutes before the break the home side almost handed Piroozi the opener as Ali Karimi pounced on a loose back pass but after cutting into the area, he scuffed his shot and Naif Al Qadi recovered to block the effort.

Piroozi’s dominance of the later stages of the first half continued but they had only a wayward strike from Bagheri to show for it.

Nassir Alshamrani looked to hand the home side a perfect start to the second half as he showed a turn off pace to beat his man and provide a pin point cross to the front post from the byline, but Saleh Sadeeq was unable to direct his header on target.

After tempers briefly boiled over midway through a tightly contested second half, Karimi was denied an almost certain opener with 16 minutes remaining as Sadeeq produced a last ditch tackle to deny the influential midfielder after he had charged into the area unchallenged.

Substitute Hamidreza Asgari almost made an instant impact after replacing Karimi with 10 minutes remaining but after dancing around a lunging challenge on the edge of the area, his shot lacked power and failed to trouble Waleed.

Esteghlal 1-1 Al Jazira: Kazemi rescues Iran outfit

TEHRAN: Esteghlal wasted two fantastic opportunities and hit the crossbar twice as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Al Jazira in their second game of the AFC Champions League at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran.

Having fallen behind to Fernando Baiano's early opener, Hossein Kazemi equalised on the stroke of half-time for the Iranians after Hashem Beikzadeh hit the bar with a header.

Arash Borhani missed a second-half penalty, Khosro Heydari saw a volley smack the crossbar and substitute Ali Alizadeh missed an empty goal as Esteghlal dominated their UAE opponents and will be frustrated to only take a point from the Group C encounter.

Al Jazira had taken the lead after nine minutes. Rafael Sobis produced a bit of trickery on the left edge of the box but saw his fierce shot deflected behind.

The resulting corner was cleared as far as Marcio Rozario and his shot from 25 yards through a crowd of players was parried by keeper Vahid Talebloo into the path of Baiano, who hammered the ball into the roof of the net with the Esteghlal defence absolutely static.

Esteghlal looked to hit back quickly and when Al Jazira defender Salem Masoud was unable to head clear a long pass knocked towards Borhani, the striker found himself with the ball at his feet but keeper Ali Khaseif was quickly out to smother.

The visitors wasted a chance to double their lead on the half-hour mark when a neat one-two presented Ibrahim Diaky with a chance but his weak shot was kicked away by Talebloo.

Esteghlal came agonisingly close to an equaliser when Beikzadeh headed Heydari's free-kick against the bar and the ball was cleared.

Esteghlal were very much in the ascendancy as half-time approached and Heydari's driving run into the box and subsequent cross broke to Kazemi but he pulled his shot disappointingly wide.

But the midfielder made up for his miss moments later when he shinned home Siavash Akbarpour's corner from three yards out to draw the hosts level.

Akbarpour saw a volley from another Heydari cross excellently tipped over the bar by Khaseif just before the hour mark and Esteghlal were then handed a glorious opportunity to go in front in the 61st minute, which they wasted in bizarre circumstances.

Akbarpour latched onto Heydari's long ball but the forward was brought down in the box by Masoud and referee Ravshan Irmatov pointed to the spot.

Borhani stepped up to take the penalty but came to a complete stop just before striking the ball after seeming to slip before sidefooting weakly into the bottom left corner after a lengthy pause.

Al Jazira complained mightily and Irmatov ordered a re-take, presumably for unsporting conduct, and Borhani's second attempt was palmed away by Khaseif diving to his right.

Another fantastic chance went begging for Esteghlal with 13 minutes to go as Heydari saw a superb 25-yard-volley cannon back off the bar and substitute Alizadeh then embarrassingly headed over from six yards with goal at his mercy and Khaseif nowhere.

Al Ettifaq 2-1 Sepahan: Subs sink Sepahan

DAMMAM - A late strike from substitute Hamad Al Hamad secured a 2-1 victory for Al Ettifaq over 10-man Sepahan at the Prince Mohammed bin Fahad Stadium on Wednesday.

The visitors were always facing a difficult task when Mohsen Bengar was sent off in the 16th minute but they took a surprise lead through Rasoul Khatibi on the stroke of half-time.

But second-half strikes from substitutes Abdulrahman Al Qahtani and Al Hamad secured a first win for Al Ettifaq in Group D.

With Al Shabab of the United Arab Emirates downing Uzbek champions Bunyodkor in the other Group D game, all four teams now have three points each.

The hosts started well as Salah Aqqal sent Prince Tagoe through on goal for the hosts in the 13th minute but the Ghanaian striker scuffed his shot into the side netting.

Tagoe then won his side a penalty three minutes later when he chased onto a long ball over the Sepahan defence before tumbling in the area under the attention of Bengar.

Korean referee Kim Dong-jin immediately pointed to the spot before showing Bengar the red card and Bashar stepped up to take the spot kick but Rahman Ahmadi dived to his left to deny the forward.

Chances for either side dried up after that although Tagoe failed to make the most of good break by Al Ettifaq in the 38th minute while Rashed Al Rahab shot high and wide three minutes later.

But the visitors stunned Al Ettifaq when they took the lead with their first shot on target in stoppage time at the end of the half.

Ehsan Haji Safi crossed from the edge of the area and Khatibi rose highest to loop a header over goalkeeper Hussain Shaian and into the back of the net.

Al Ettifaq looked to make a quick response early in the second half and came within inches of equalising when Sayyaf Albishi’s header from a corner grazed the crossbar.

But they drew level in the 63rd minute when Aqqal whipped a cross into the area and though Saleh Bashar missed his attempted volley, the ball found Al Qahtani, who had come on at half-time, and the midfielder struck a low left foot drive into the corner of the net.

Ahmadi saved well from Al Rahab’s angled drive nine minutes later before Tagoe had a goal wiped out for offside a minute later.

The hosts continued to dominate as they looked to grab a winner and Albishi slipped to volley wide when in a good position with eight minutes remaining.

But the winner duly arrived for Al Ettifaq with just four minutes remaining when Al Hamad, who had been on the pitch only a matter of minutes, struck a fine 25-yard effort into the back of the net with Ahmadi stranded.
