Kiwis qualify for South Africa

New Zealand have qualified for the FIFA World Cup™ for the first time in 28 years with a heart-stopping 1-0 win over Bahrain.

Young striker Rory Fallon was the hero with a goal a minute before half-time for a 1-0 aggregate win following a scoreless draw h in Manama last month. Fallon, capped only three times by his country scored with a header direct from a Leo Bertos corner a few moments before the interval.

The result is heartbreak for Bahrain who lost in the intercontinental play-off against Trinidad and Tobago four years ago. Both teams had opportunities to score with Sayed Mohamed having a second-half penalty saved by Mark Paston.

Having only qualified for the FIFA World Cup once, the All Whites guaranteed progression to South Africa 2010 before a record crowd in the capital, Wellington.
